I have a friend who is convinced that if your urine is not clear you are dehydrated.

I have never heard of this, Any truth to it?

Not exactly, if you take a quality vitamin pill, drink energy drinks or protein powder. Your piss will be a neon color. It won't matter how much water you're drinking. It's going to be neon.

Like was said it does depend on diet, but when I'm out and about and trying to make sure I'm not dehydrating myself it's a decent rule of thumb.  IIRC, a LOT of people are chronically dehydrated.

ETA- I can't remember the name of the drug, but there's a urinary tract painkiller that will make you pee ORANGE.  Not just really yellow, straight Deej's crocs orange.

Not sure of that, but everytime I go, I note the color of it and try to see if I can drink enough water to make it lighter next time. It's sort of like a game, and it doesn't hurt to drink more anyways.

75% of the population is dehydrated. when working last summer i drank 3.5 gallons of water without pissing once during that day. it was 99 degrees out.

then again, too much water in too short of time can fuck you up. someone died recently from a water chugging contest.

Under a normal diet the color of the urin should be closely monitored.

If your feeling like crap and you take a piss and its the color of tea, then yeah you need to start drinking more water.

If you working out in the heat, drink water constantly and monitor the color. Should be mostly clear to a little bit of color.

To much water can lead to hypoxia (i believe thats the term.) where the salts/nutrients get dilluted to much and you can die.

As a general rule, if you are well hydrated, your pee should be almost colorless.  The more yellow/orange it is, the less well hydrated you are.
