OK; I'm a dinosaur when it come to electronic stuff.  My current job assignment, at least until I get fed up and retire, is managing a bus garage 3rd shift.  Plenty of down-time and it would be nice to be able to surf the web.  There are always sales on decent laptops and I'm thinking of taking the plunge.  Looks like I could get into the hardware for well under $500.  What do I need for true wireless internet?  My job location is in the inner city.  Don't think there's any hot spots nearby.

I checked some of the service provider websites and got more confused.  Who has the best service and price?

In the city it is likely that you will be able to mooch a connection in many spots without paying for any service at all.

If your unable to pick up someone elses wifi there you'll need to get a broadband card for the laptop, sprint and verizon seem to be decent around here. After rebate you can get one for about $30 and $45-55 a month for the service.

No, when somebody complains they have additional IPs asigned to computers they don't own by their router and they start to check into it.  May be rare, but it can happen.

So, LOL and test your luck as whatever happens has no impact on my life whatsoever, I just choose to provide the information that I happen to be aware of. Ignore it, doesn't bother me in the least.

Most people that run wide-open unsecured networks don't have the computer knowledge to tell if you are using their service anyway. Still, it could get you in trouble if you're caught.
