Any fans of Death here? Not a fan of the lame "ROAROAROAOROAROAOARO" garbage death metal, but Chuck Shuldiner was a classier than that crap, he didn't over-do it. Innovators of the genre and some kicking guitar, bass and drums. Crystal Mountain |
Correct! Call it whatever you would like, but.... I do listen to oldies, but this is what I and others in my generation grew up listening to. Did you only listen to music that was made before you were born???? I am sure when I have kids I will call there music crap and think about the good 'ol days! |
I don't know, I in general don't like the genre at all but the guy is a legend and he's a hell of a guitar player. |
I find the different categories and subbgenre classifications of different types of metal amusing. You have Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, Thrash Metal, Speed Metal, Death Metal, NuMetal, Metal Core and even Hair Metal. Yes, they are all distinct to us, but if you play any of it (from The Scorpions to Obituary) for someone who isn't into metal then their reaction will be either: 1. "That's not music!" or B. "Is this Led Zepplin/Black Sabbath?" |

Chuck kicks ass. Dismember's album "Death Metal" is my favorite death metal album. I prefer old thrash, some Black Metal but love good Power Metal like Blind Gaurdian, Gamma Ray, 80s Iron Maiden, and Nightwish. Primordial is the best band to ever play a note, they play a strange Irish Folk Black Metal mix. |
| Chuck Schuldiner was a masterful guitar player. It's really too bad that he passed away. I'm a BIG fan of Death...it's some of my favorite music to play when I'm screwing around with my guitars. I liked Death because they weren't your typical evil, satanic BS, joke-metal. Some of their earlier stuff was based on horror movies, but the later stuff was pretty good. |
1,000 Eyes is possibly my favorite Death song of all time. "Privacy and intimacy as we know it Will be a memory Among many to be passed down To those who never knew..." |
![]() At least we found a middle ground of awesomeness. P.S. Megadeth owns your face. ![]()

Death > Megadeth ![]() |
| Oh, and let's not forget about drummer Gene Hoglan. That guy is crazy! I never saw Death play live, but I have seen Gene Hoglan play with Strapping Young Lad. That was really a treat. Anything guitar and/or drum-oriented, I'm a big fan. I have been listening to death metal since I was in 8th grade (around 1989), but I still like my Joe Satriani. Even John Williams' classical guitar work inspires me. |
Gene Hoglan was the man! Too bad SYL broke up, they were an interesting outfit. |
I should probably consolidate my thoughts before I click the Submit button...![]() James Murphy is also a great metal guitarist. I think he played on Spiritual Healing, but he has also played with Obituary and Testament. He's got two solo albums, and I really love his style. He's another Floridian who had a cancerous tumor, but fortunately for all of us, he was able to have his removed (from the base of his skull, around his brainstem) and has since fully recovered. |
Recently happened within the last 6 months or so. Devin Townsend decided to leave. "In May of 2007, at a press conference for Ziltoid the Omniscient, Devin announced that he had decided to put an end to The Devin Townsend Band (and Strapping Young Lad), and not to tour again in the future. He will continue to record and release solo music under his own name." |

Death is my least favorite form of metal, Even so Bolt Thrower-How can you be conservative and not like BT? Six Feet Under Carcass old Morbid Angel Bloodbath Old Mans Child I dont know if I wanna call Opeth death, they are Death rooted, perhaps Progressive Death, if there is such a thing. Doomdeath is where its at. My Dying Bride, Amorphis, ect. |
Opeth would, at best, be progressive melodic death metal. I love Mikael Akerfeldt, but he was MUCH better in Bloodbath than Opeth. |
Amorphis "Tales from the thousand lakes" and "Elegy" are amazing. As I get older, my tastes are nearly all overseas stuff. Mostly Viking Metal.I used to think that the most tallented genre of metal was Doom, after getting more into Viking metal over the years, its the most amazing sound out there. Moonsorrow Finntroll Falkenbach Empyrium Thyfring Old Bathory. |
All good bands. I love your avvy by the way. Sam visited that place in Metal: A Headbanger's Journey. |
Point well taken, for those not into metal the differences between the various types of metal are meaningless. However, for those of us into metal the distinctions can be important and understood. I wanted to say to Hemi-Cuda that Thrash metal and Speed were distinct for us back in the day with the primary distinction that thrash had slow heavy crunch breaks that allowed for the mosh pit to form and roll, while speed metal never had the slow break for people to mosh. Anthrax, Testament, Overkill and Exodus were thrash to us where speed had a great variety from less to more heavy but not the typical mosh breaks for example Cacophony to Kreator for speed metal. Anyway that was how our band mad the distinction for thrash - basically writing into the shong the mosh breaks. |
Yeah, thats a good DVD. I LOVED how as soon as he got to Oslo, they broke into Enslaved "Havenless" Havenless If that does not warm your blood, you dont like metal!! |
|
I really enjoy Testament. Alex Skolnik was one of my favorite guitar players. Now that he's back in the band, he adds a really cool and different jazz flavor to Testament's music. And now that what's-his-name from Dimmu Borgir is Testament's new drummer, I can't wait for their next release. I got to see Testament play late last year with their (almost) original lineup. It was Chuck, Eric, Alex, Greg, and John Tempesta on drums. I had a thrash metal boner for 2 hours straight - ask my girlfriend.

SBCZilla, This is a pretty cool song. I just might have to check out more stuff from Enslaved. Have you heard of Ajattara? I think that's how it's spelled. It's got the old singer and one of the guitarists from Amorphis. It's a more aggressive sound...I haven't heard much, just what's on their MySpace page. But it sounds pretty good. |
Yeah, but most of the At the Gates crew went on to form The Haunted!! Probably one of the best GOthenburg Thrash style bands out there today. |
I have a few of thier songs on my Ipod. its Pasi Koskinen, the now former Amorphis lead man. Great Black Metal. Makes me think of early-mid Bathory. |
As to Death Drummers, I think Mike Smith of Suffocation should be credited with the "blast beat" Mike Smith And speaking of Death, thier former bassist Steve Digergio is a beast!!Steve from Death Steve from Death, Glen from Deicide, Joey from Skipknot Also, one could do a lot worse than to pick up the "Roadrunner United" album. It comes with a cool DVD also. |
+1 I like metal as much as the next guy but this whole "Death metal" and "Scream metal" is just retarded. Part of music is hearing and understanding the lyrics....as well as they integrate into the song.
