I have a tree stump in my yard that is about 3' in diameter. I remember hearing about a product you can apply to the stump to make it rot away.

Does anyone have any advice or old Indian tricks that I can use?

I live in a residential area, so Tannerite is out.

a tree company can grind 'em down into mostly sawdust, they wont get all the stump but enough you can back fill the hole with dirt again

dynamite chop the major roots, hook a chain around it and pull it out with your truck/jeep.
not recommended if you own a ford or toyota

I'd call a stump grinder since you're in a residential area.

I had one about two feet across I burned out, but I'm a country bumpkin living outside city limits.

I had four stumps in my yard that I removed.
I used an ax.
It took a while but it works.

These stumps were about a foot in diameter.

Drill holes in the stump and pour salt in the holes and over the stump.

The truck thing is out since there is limited access to my back yard.
Burning it would probably get the city on my ass.

So this stump grinding thing will grind it down below grade so I can plant grass on top of it?

I own a stump grinder. If you plan on having it ground do not put the miracle cures on it. That shit is bad for who ever grinds it and they will probably charge you more if they do it at all. And yes you can tell if you've used it you have to drill a bunch of holes in the stump. Besides I've never seen it work.

Just have it ground out and be done with it.

ETA. Yes you can get them ground down usually 6-8 inches below the surface if you rake the chips back in they will fill the hole but in a year or less you will have a big dip there.

You have several options:

1) Tannerite.

2) Get a stump grinder machine.  You can rent one or call a tree service and have them do it.  The latter will most likely be about the same price and will be easier in the long run.

3) Get a shovel, an axe, and go to it.  For a stump that size, I'd also suggest large amounts of beer and/or some labor help.

Option 2 is, by far, the best bet.

I've just cut them as close to ground level as possible---

Bore a shitload of 1" holes-------5-8" deep---

Bust on it with an ax or a maul for bit then cover with dirt.

The leftovers pretty much disappear in a year or three...

Seriously. If you ever look at the ingredients in stump remover, that's what it is.

If its recently cut down, you could grow tasty mushrooms!

When we took down a large Oak, I drilled & plugged the stump.
We have had some Shiitake shrooms from the stump, & a log
that I also inoculated.

300 pounds of dynamite ought to do 'er.

Or you could just call and have it ground out.
