I work for the sheriff's dept and my boss wanted me to start work on a shift schedule for our dispatchers and I haven't a clue how to do it.  The schedule that we have, I think works, but he wanted me to figure out another way.  We have 4 full time personnel and 1 part-timer.  Obviously we are open 24/7/365. We have 1 dispatcher working per shift.  The full timers need 40 hours a week.

I want to make it fair for everyone but I know that is hard to do.

Is there any software programs that will help?

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks

How would something like do:

12a - 8a   1 1 1 1 1 2 2
8a - 4p       3 2 2 2 P 3 3
4p - 12a   4 4 3 3 4 4 4

8 hour shifts, rotate shifts every quarter (1->2, 2->3, 3->4, 4->1), initial shifts based upon seniority (longest employee chooses shift, then next guy, etc).

1, 2, 3, 4 = full-time people
P = part-timer

1 & 4 have 5 days straight
2 & 3 split into 3/2 straight
P always works same period

10, 12 hour shifts probably will not work for you.

12 hour shifts
first group works T W off TH F then works SA S M then off T W work TH F off SA S M rinse repeat
second group works the days the other 2 arent
Use the part timer to cover peak times vacations etc
