Please edjumacate me on which should I get? I don't want to end up like the BETA people during the VHS war.

Also I would prefer to wait until the price comes down before I buy a player, so would an Upconvert DVD player be a waste of money? The only reason I would get an Upcom
nvert DVD player is because of the HDMI connection. Will my regular DVD's quality be improved enough to justify the $99 for the player?

Blu-Ray is superior in almost every way to HD-DVD. Whats more, for a very short amount of time (they are phasing out of production) You can buy a 20GB PS3 for only $400, which is far less than a standalone player. Just something to think about, My PS3's Blu-Ray is amazing, i love watching stuff on it.

It's really too early for either.  Plain ole DVD is still outselling both by a wide margin.  Wait at least half a year.

It's hard to say.  Blu-ray is superior in all aspects, though IMO it is hardly noticeable.

HD is FAR more popular.  Blu-ray is better but I still think HD will end up winning out...it's probably smartest to way a year though because I think in the next 12 months one will really start to pull away.

I"m betting on Blue Ray.. not backing it up with a purchase just yet, but indicators point to it... PS3 has a big part of the market and I heard that sony gave the ok for porn to have the technology.

www.bloggingstocks.com/2007/07/26/blu-ray-vs-hd-dvd-the-battle-rages-on/

<snip>
The momentum currently appears to favor Blu-ray, which is also winning the content provider battle. Many Hollywood studios are either releasing solely in Blu-ray format or on both formats. Two of the summer's blockbusters -- Spider-Man 3 and Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End -- will both be Blu-ray exclusives. Only General Electric's (NYSE: GE) Universal Studios is exclusively supporting HD DVD.

Although the HD DVD camp claims it's not worried, pointing to other retailers including Best Buy Inc (NYSE: BBY) and Circuit City Stores Inc (NYSE: CC) who carry their player, they should think again. This battle will be won by the content available on them, and not by the amount of shelf space given the players. Target and Blockbuster are pointing the way to Blu-ray, and that is clear indication that the choice may very well be Blu-ray.

And here's a great page that analyzes Amazon.com's actual sales and inventory of both Blu-Ray and HD-DVDs in real-time.

Best bet:  Pay the $26 for a team membership and search the topic.  It comes up quite a bit and there has been some good info in those threads.  If you new info saves you money in your purchase then the $26 pays for itself AND you get BOTD forum action.

Here's a good thread, from the depths of the Movie Forum

What isn't shown is that despite the sales figures, if you look at the # of BD players on the market vs the software sales.

BD ISN'T doing very well.  Attachment rate is pretty low.

That's primarily because a lot of the BR players are PS3s, whose owners (if not purchasers) are kids who aren't going to be buying a lot of BR movies.  What is REALLY relevant is that BR media is outselling HD-DVD *despite* the following HD-DVD (squandered) advantages:

- HD-DVD was available for more than 6 months before Blu-Ray
- HD-DVD players have been less expensive than Blu-Ray players the entire time
- HD-DVD had a lot more media out before the first Blu-Ray discs were released.

Given the above, HD-DVD should still be ahead by a wide margin.  Instead, they continue to be behind BR in sales, and every day it seems that there is more and more support by industry, retail, and consumers for Blu-Ray.

Sure, HD-DVD probably has another year or two, but unless something changes radically, its days are numbered.

Same thing pretty much happened in VHS vs Beta battle as well.  Beta had a two year lead in that battle.

All it would take is Wal Mart to flood the market with cheap HD-DVD players and you would have your winner.

I think the battle will be between cheap HD-DVD players vs. Blu-Ray media content. I would tend to favor the content angle.

I am sitting this battle out. I think Blu-Ray will prevail but I feel I have the luxury of waiting.  A cheapo upscale DVD player is fine for me for the time being.
