Do people typically inflate their asking price for stuff on Craigslist, expecting to get haggled down to what they really hope to get for it? Or do they usually expect to get the asking price?

When you've used it Did you pay the asking price or did you haggle?

I found a thing I want on Craigslist for $800, the next week it was reposted at $700. I wonder if I should give them a lowvball offer of $500? The ad says they are moving house and need to sell it. It retails for about $1000 new. I've seen them go for $400-500 on there before.

I always ask whats the least amount that they would take as I am on a budget.  That way I will not offend.  But, if they counter with "how much can you pay"  I tell them an amount I'm "willing" to pay.  If its too much I move on....

I have never paid what they were asking on craigslist.
