Ok just got off the phone with Comcast customer disservice. When did these asshats start charging for a service call? My Digital service went to hell last week, they came out (late and with an attitude) and did NOTHING. I actually had to put an amplifier on my line, that I paid for, to get a decent picture again, all because they did something on the network that degraded my signal a few dB. So a charge shows up for $19.99 for a service call, which I got them to remove. I won't bother going into the other details I tried to get explained on my bill. My bill just keeps going up and up and service gets worse and worse and then these nickel and dime charges. I'm paying over $150 per month for cable and Internet service, yet they keep pissing me off with stupid charges. rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr rant off

Anyways, call and cancel.  Tell them you are going to Dish Network.  Tell them to KEEP you, they need to give you:

#1: The introductory price all new subscribers get for the 1st year.
#2: Your wiring unfcuked up.

Your head will spin when you see how fast they drop their price!  Same thing w/ my DSL.  I keep threatening Bellsouth and they keep my fee at the new subscriber level...

There's a reason that most people call them ComCRAP

I've been lucky to live in places where other providers are.  I'd sooner go with dial up and rabbit ears than deal with half the shit I've read about on the telecom forums.

Threatening to cancel your service will work wonders, trust me. For reference, I pay 69.95 for digital cable and internet, 11.95 for HD and DVR, and 3.00 for modem rental

Comcast recently bought adelphia which was my previous cable provider.

Ive had alot of problems recently since Comcast took over, I dont know why, since its not like the lines changed or anything

Just found out Comcast does charge for service calls if they determine the problem isnt their fault..

Same thing here...fortunately for us, our service here absolutely rocks.  We got a DVR cable box for like $3.00/month more than a standard digital unit and we get wicked fast internet service, consistently 7 Mb+ down....the prices are a little steep overall, but to date they've given us little if anything to complain about.

I was unaware of their new policy on service calls....that sucks.

Its not a new policy it's just more rigorous enforcement of an existing policy of charging for service calls that are not Comcast fault or are customer caused.

Gotcha.  I'm a network engineer by trade, so I've never had to call them out for something that wasn't their fault, even when it was still Adelphia in our area.

I always piss them off because I don't hesitate to tell their Tier-1 folks on the phone that I have done all the preliminary stuff they're going to ask me to do, so let's skip that and get to looking at their network as the issue.

I have had Direct TV for about 6 years now, and am very pleased.  Comcast pissed me off when I moved, so I went to the dish.

My next door neighbor just dumped them and went with DTV as well.

Not many things have I done pissed off that I couldn't have done better if I gave it a little research first.  This was one of those rare things.

Send me a copy of that bill!  I need ammo to argue them down in price. They want to charge me $69.99 for just HSI.  I keep arguing for the 34.99 deal and getting it renewed, and I don't even have cable tv.

Oh also if anyone knows the discount codes post them.  I used to use MA1 but that one got canceled.

Also, they overcharged me $200.

How can the problem NOT be their fault?  It's their cable, their converter box, their programming.  All we do is pay for the privelege of renting their equipment.

What's the problem?  I might be able to help.

Also, the service delay is going to be a local issue.  In most areas, DirecTV can schedule a service call within 48 hours of your problem report.

There are some real idiots in this world... Some of the possibilities could include simply not having the cable conected to the wall, or having the TV set to "video".....

The cable company is only responsible for the cable where it enters the home, usually the outside wall of the residence, everything within the walls is the customers responsibility.

I had basic Comcast service. I kept losing channels. First it was Oxygen (my fiancee used to watch), now it is ESPN Classic (that I watch). I went with the Dish network. I got the 200 channel package and blocked maybe 50 of the home shopping, religous and PPV channels and STILL have more channels than the Comcast basic service FOR THE SAME PRICE. This is not the introductory rate either, this is after the introductory rate.

I called Comcast to cancel my service and they offered me more channels for less money. I asked for how long. They said for six months. I said that would only help if I only had six months to live, what if I happen to live longer? Well the price goes up to double what I was paying before with the very same shitty service. Thanks, but no thanks!

Then they gave me the crap about bad reception with satelite and how they have fast internet service (no thanks, I'm pulling 10 Mbps from my Verizon DSL. I doubt they'll match that), I just told them to cancel my cable and hung up. They must really hate to lose customers to be so pushy.

You should get a free gmail address from Google and use that instead of your comcast account.  that way you have one email address no matter who your isp is, even if you move to another area.

I wish I could get rid of Comcast.  We have no alternatives for cable (no Verizon) at all.  Also cannot get a dish because of the way my condo is set up.  So I bite the bullet and pay $65/mo for basic analog cable.  Sigh.

Same thing happened to me. Called and asked what happened and they said it went to HD. So I asked why the bill didn't go down. Got some lame ass answer about the rates and did I want to change to HD. We do need to have competition everywhere for cable, and no more monopoly.

Committee approves cable bill

By LLOYD DUNKELBERGER

Sun Tallahasse Bureau

TALLAHASSEE - Over the objections of city and county governments, a House committee on Tuesday backed a bill that would take away the power of those governments to grant cable television franchises.

Proponents of the bill (HB 1199), who include the phone companies, say it will provide consumers with more choices and lower cable TV rates. Opponents, who include the cable industry, say it could hurt consumers by removing a requirement that cable services be provided in all communities.

The bill, which is one of the most heavily lobbied measures in the session, passed the House Finance and Tax Committee in a 7-2 vote. The Senate has yet to take a vote on a similar bill.

Rep. Trey Traviesa, R-Tampa, the chief sponsor of the proposal, reiterated his argument that Florida cable users could save more than $600 million a year if the current local government franchising system were replaced by a system that allowed statewide franchises. It would amount to savings of $125 a year for each household that has cable, he said.

Traviesa said he has tried to deal with the concerns of local government, noting he agreed to an amendment that would require new cable companies to offer the same number of educational and government-access channels that now exist in a community if they decide to provide services there.

But he said opponents continue to want to protect the existing cable TV franchising system, which he says represents a "de facto" monopoly that provides consumers with few choices.

"I've done my best to listen and compromise," Traviesa said. "At the end of the day, I guess they just don't want to compromise."

Local governments raised a variety of objections to the bill, which legislative analysts say could cost city and county governments more than $30 million in lost franchising fees if it passes.

John Smith, a lobbyist for the Florida League of Cities, said the bill creates "a handful of winners and losers." He warned that by eliminating the provision that requires cable companies to serve all communities it could lead to "cherry picking" by the new companies or marketing strategies that bypass some communities.

Bob McKee, a lobbyist for the Florida Association of Counties, said Miami-Dade County removed the so-called "build-out" requirement from its local franchising ordinance to try to bring more competition to the county. But he said it didn't bring more competition, noting only 3 percent of the cable customers in the state's largest county now have a choice in providers.

He said keeping the requirement that cable companies build out their systems to all communities means services are provided "not just on Main Street but on my street as well."

Lobbyists for the Florida Cable Telecommunications Association continued to warn that the legislation could lead to lawsuits if the existing cable companies try to break their franchise agreements with the local governments.

But a majority of House members on the finance and tax panel said they were convinced the bill will help consumers.

Rep. Carl Domino, R-Jupiter, said consumers don't care if their cable service is provided by a phone company, a satellite company or a cable company. "They just want that product," he said. "In my view the consumer is best served by opening up the competition."

Rep. Don Brown, R-DeFuniak Springs, said he is sympathetic to complaints from constituents about the escalating cost of cable service, which has risen nationally by 86 percent since 1995. He said he is convinced by the experience in other states that have gone to statewide franchises, resulting in more choices for consumers and lower prices.

"Competition works," he said.
Traviesa's bill has one more committee stop to clear before it can go to the House floor.
