I just discovered this. I never watched it when it was on or saw the movie Serenity. So I am way late to this one. I was given the DVD set and consumed it in two days and caught Serenity by accident on HBO last night. HOLY COW this was outstanding writing, great story and special effects. How in God's name does something that good get canceled? All I want to know... I did a minor bit of searching and there was/is a huge fan base. Where did the support failing occur? This should have lasted more than one half of one season. IPSC_GUY SIERRA II ALPHA |
Yeah, they showed the episodes out of order, and changes the times and even days it played on to work it around sports. |
The same way The Family Guy got cancelled. Fox programmers are fucking idiots. With TFG, they randomly scheduled it, you never knew when it was on. With Firefly, they aired it Friday, which is a ratings killer alone. It was a serial program, but they ran them out of order so no one knew what the hell was going on. They didn't even run the pilot first. Yes it was good tv, but it was killed by Fox's incompetence. |
fixed. ETA: Same thing happened to B5, though later in the series, and a different network. One of the few shows pulled back from the dead. |

Josh Wheden wrote and directed FireFly. He also created, wrote and directed Buffy the Vampire Slayer and another short lived series on NBC. Wheden has great talent but a long history of bad blood with FOX since Fox cancled Buffy on its 100th episode (once more, with feeling), and didn't tell anyone till after the cast and crew party. His writing and chracter development on FireFly was A+. I miss that show. River Tam, my kinda girl. |

I was late also, but its a great Sci-Fi series! Did you look at the universe rules on wikipedia? Wikipedia- Firefly the series The universe |
No, I didn't, thanks The more I look into this all I can say is I am astounded. I did not know they aired the episodes out of order. That took brains, yes sir. The Movie sought to tie up the story ark as best it could and I applaud that, I really do. I just hope there is more to come. Me and a zillion other people... IPSC_GUY SIERRA II ALPHA The scene when Jayne tries to trade his rifle "Vera" for the girl, PRICELESS is what that was right there. |

Firefly didn't fit in any of normal "pigeon holes" that network suits knew. A sci-fi western with a universe comprised of English, Chinese, cannibalistic humans, bad guys with Nazi overtones flying around in spaceships but using six-guns and horses. The series only got the chance because of Joss and the hit that was Buffy but it was obvious that they couldn't get their mind around it so never gave it a chance. Serenity only got made because of the overwhelming fan support and the spectacular sales of the Firefly DVD's. The suits didn't understand it still, but though they could milk a few more bucks out of it anyway. Well, Morena got another chance with SG-1, for awhile at least |
It amazes me how a show this good could be cancelled while shit like Grey's Anatomy and Desperate Housewives is still on. Every single line of dialogue in Firefly is masterfully crafted and both the plot and the symbolism therein are compelling. Whereas the entire premise behind the aforementioned crappy shows is something to the tune of "women trying to make it in a man's world". Let's face it, that's just their excuse for being incompetent and not in control of their emotions. ![]() We all think it, I just said it. |
I bitch everytime they are watching a show at work, normally it , they keep this junk on the air but cancled Firefly |

Favorite movie of all time. Great show. I read that Joss is trying to make a 2nd movie, sort of a prequel of sorts. I have watched the series 2 to 3 times now on DVD, and I am due to watch it again once I get the Big Screen. I saw the movie first, and then the found out it was based off of a tv show, and I bought the DVD set the next day off of ebay. |

Firefly is a textbook example of how to kill a series that could have been a cash cow for the network. The dialogue is unique and memorable. Do a Google search for "Firefly quotes." Gems like: "If your hand touches metal I swear by my pretty floral bonnet I will end you." Also, there are some sites that have translations of the Chinese phrases they used. Pretty hilarious, like "Explosive diarrhea of an elephant!" |
"I'm goin' to the special hell" |

Great series, great movie. Great babes as well, sigh. I absolutely fell for Yosaffbridge, mmmmmmmmm... PS If you liked the babe who played the madam of the whorehouse, she's been on some other shows. She plays a dominatrix on some crime show I've never watched. Her name is Melinda/Mindy Clarke. Get Return of the Living Dead 3 to see her when she was young, the foxiest dead babe you'll ever see. It's a pretty twisted movie, and she's hotter'n hell. |
CSI (Las Vegas). She's been in several episodes as "Lady Heather" and was TOTALLY |

I'm watching it for the third time since discovering it less than a year ago. Anyway, "I'll be in my bunk." Actually, I gotta get a shower and go to work. I'll be taking one of the DVDs (and my laptop) with me to watch during my downtime. |
None of the actors command high salaries, the set doesn't have to be big or expensive-looking, and video cams and CGI are both getting cheaper by the week. There HAS to be some way of turning a profit on a second film - or another TV season. |

I bought the movie and series based on the comments made on this board. But I didn't get around to watching them right away. I finally watched the pilot and realized it's awesomeness, but the disk was bad and the second two stories wouldn't play. It was too late to take it back, and the reciept was long lost anyway. I saw it on sale again at Target for 20 bux, and bought it, just to watch the first two episodes. As mentioned, they decided to make the movie based on DVD sales. And Fox did bring back Family Guy because of DVD sales. So I figured, hey, I'm a patron of the arts. |
Let's not make stuff up now. Whedon's "other" series was Angel, the Buffy spin-off. It lasted for 5 seasons on the WB network, not NBC. And since when did F*X have the ability to cancel other network's shows? Buffy was originally on the WB, then was picked up by UPN. And not because it was cancelled, UPN won it in a bidding war. One little bit of trivia. During the Fall '02 season, he had three different shows on three different networks. Firefly on F*X, Buffy on UPN, and Angel on the WB. |
[Jayne is walking menacingly towards Mal with a large gun] Jayne: Six men came to kill me one time. And the best of 'em carried this. It's a Callahan full-bore auto-lock. Customized trigger, double cartridge thorough gauge. This is my very favorite gun. [he holds the gun out to Mal] Mal: [exclaims in Chinese] You offering me a trade? Jayne: A trade? Hell, it's theft. This the best gun made by man. It has extreme sentimental value. It's miles more worthy 'n what you got! Mal: What I got? She has a name. Jayne: So does this. I call it Vera. Mal: Well, my days of not takin' ya seriously are certainly comin' to a middle. |

I also have it on my iPod.
