Have been thinking about getting a part time job with a armored car company here in town. They are hiring armed guards, but you must provide your own weapon & gear. They do pay more than the ambulance gig I'm doing now & with my background as a USAF Security troop it should not be all that hard to get a toe in the door. Seen em around town & the majority of em carry Glocks, but a couple old farts had revolvers & I saw one guy with a 1911. It's not a career I'm looking for, just something to help pay off the CC and a way to get some extra spending cash. However, I don't know much about this kind of job & if it's worth it or not. |

I did it for a number of years. I had a full time job as a manager and did the armored car job for many years so my wife could stay home with the kids. I liked it. It is an honorable job. My impressions: 1. You will work with some people that should not be in the job. They do not take it seriously enough. Avoid them if you can. 2. There are some people that take the job WAAAAAAY too seriously and may end up getting you killed when they do not need to. Rambo would have made a bad guard. Avoid them if you can. 3. Take it seriously. ALWAYS be professional - especially when others around you are not. 4. Find someone who takes the job as seriously as you. Pair up with them....it will make all the difference. 5. If you are smart and professional you will move up the ladder. I made vault supervisor in 6 months over guys that had been there for years. 6. If there is a drop vault in the truck USE IT! Many of the guys I worked with did not. If they ever got robbed the FBI would really investigate them because it would appear as an inside job. 7. 90% of the jobs have someone on the inside. Always be aware of who you are working with. 8. NEVER LIE. NEVER TAKE A SHORT CUT. FOLLOW PROCEDURES NO MATTER WHAT. 9. If you are working with someone who has money problems, child support or are getting divorced WATCH THEM! 10. Find activities to do in the truck that may save your life. At every stop while I was waiting, I was writing down License plate numbers, car discriptions, etc. to keep from getting bored and sloppy. I crossed checked them each week to see if I was being watched. My partner used radios and developed code words that differed each week in case we were being monitored. 11. The money is replaceable, you are not. Give up the damn money. If you are being robbed, then you have already failed in your job. Do no look like a target and you will not be shot at. Most importantly - IF YOU LOOK LIKE A SLOB, A PUSHOVER OR WEAK, YOU WILL BECOME THE TARGET OF A ROBBERY. Criminals will watch and pick the truck that looks like the easiest to hit. If you look and act like a sonofabitch and be professional, then you will make them look elsewhere. Anything else? I liked the job. |

Thanks for the great advice, now if I was just not such a fat fuck Figure I'll e-mail my resume and see what comes of it. Don't want to go all hard core, but without a doubt I'll revert to my old NCO days and take the job seriously and be professional. Figure image is a major part & I'll look like a fat fucking security guard with spit shined boots, a high n tight and a clean pistol & weab gear ![]() ![]() Just hope they provide the training ammo & let me carry my P229 loaded with Double Tap's ammo in 357sig |
This guy hit it right on. I managed a company in KC, MO for several years. I took over after the guy I worked for got tagged team while he was filling an ATM machine by himself. He did the same ATM every day at the same time with no back-up. He paid for it with his life. Overall I really enjoyed the work. I will say I didn't trust any of my employees 100%. There were a couple I had close relationships with but I never, never let my guard down. If I was in the facility, I had my weapon on at all times. Inside jobs happen a significant amount more than street hits. The comment that AP1776 made about professional appearance/actions is so true. If you look like you can handle yourself and your weapon, you will be left alone. If you look like gomer and act like gomer, you better watch out. I purchased glocks for all my officers. I would HIGHLY recommend a semi-auto pistol. I could not even begin to imagine carrying a revolver. |
