I'm sick of lugging bottles of water from the store for drinking.  My tap water tastes aweful, plus who know what crap is floating in it.  So, I'm looking around for an under the sink water filtration. I was look at reverse osmosis filtration, but have read that RO water is unhealthy to drink.

Any water experts out there with suggestions??

RO water is fine to drink, you do want to stay away from distilled or deionized water as there can be long term problems with them leaching minerals out of the body.
I have had one of those under sink RO systems for years and it really makes the water palatable, you will still need a carbon filter to remove any chemicals left after the RO section.

I put a GE Single Stage Performance filter under my sink when I installed new granite, and it works great.  You can buy the complete kit at Home Depot, which contains the valves, tubing, and faucet that you need, or you can buy the parts separately in order to get a nicer water filter faucet.  I found that Lowes has a better selection of water filter faucets, and all the tubing and valves you need to install it yourself.  Works great, and the water tastes as good or better than bottled water.

if your water is as bad as ours you will be spending all your time changing filters.

I still go the bottled water route.

Has there ever been any REAL evidence of this?  I hear it all the time, but always with no qualification.

I think it's funny as shit.

I have a RO unit under my sink. Cost around $130 at Menards, and works great. Install was easy.

I've only read bit and pieces of how RODI water is unhealthy, I've also read that RO water was too.  Then I've read it IS healthy.  Way to confuse people.

I'm going to check out Lowes and Home Depot.  I was just looking at this unit;

...I don't see why it couldn't.

Typically it's a multi stage setup. A sediment filter, a carbon filter, and a RO membrane. My system said the sediment and carbon filters are good for 3-6 months, and the RO membrane is good for 18-24 months.

You could bypass the sediment and carbon filters, but then the RO membrane would crud up alot quicker.

(i'm not a plumber, nor am i a waterologist. But i have a self installed unit.)

I manage a chem lab that does environmental monitoring on water from lakes, rivers and aquifers in Florida.  Questions like this come in all the time and every time I recommend going down to the local library and checking out a book called "The Home Water Supply: How to Find, Filter, Store, and Conserve It" by Stu Campbell.  Amazon has it for about 13 bucks.  While the writing is a little folksy for my taste, it does a very good job of addressing most of the concerns people have about drinking water in a simple easy to understand way.
