| Neat picture. Looks like he's on a roof at an airport somewhere, and look at the strange holes in the handguard near the bi-pod. Wonder what those are used for. Very off the shelf set-up. Makes me think this guy might be good and doesn't need super sniper 007 gear to turn off someone's lights if it came down to it. |

Guys, This is real, I linked it from the USAF web site. I thought it was interesting cause the Air Force is not known to be first in line when this kind of new hardware is issued, and the commercial scope, bipod and lenscaps all have that "retail" look. Other than the extra position on the selector, you could put this rig together at any decent sporting goods shop. Betcha he knows how to shoot it, though... |

I had an employee who was in an infantry squad in Desert Storm, he said quite a few of the guys had privately owned scopes mounted on their M16's. |

In any case, the scope mounted this way is really too high to get a decent zero at much less than 200yds, which is probably OK for this guy. The gun is pretty awkward when set up like this, IMO it doesn't handle very well. |

It's like DaMan says, the Guard (usually) doesn't care if you do this kind of stuff as long as you don't modify Gov't property. This guy probably owns the lower handguard the bipod is mounted to and reinstalls the issue one when he turns in his weapon, ditto for the scope and cheek piece. During my years in the Guard I always had a Colt 3X scope on my rifle. I told people that asked about it that I was the "designated sniper" and nearly always got something like "Oh, I see" in response. They never asked who designated me and I never told them that I designated myself. On a more practical note, the scope made finding "my" M16 MUCH easier even in a large stack of rifles. The only time the scope came off was for qualification. It would have been cool to fire it on the Qual. range but not hardly fair to the other guys. Don in Ohio |

I have found that if you carry a legal pad and takes notes, looking serious, you can go almost anywhere. No one ever asks you who you are or why you are there. They just assume you must be more important than they are. With all the new paranoia, that will surely end. |
