I thought this was a good one.

Is that an off-the-shelf Leupold?

Looks like a 6-20x50 with Quake stretch-fit lens caps and Kwik-Site rings.

One is all you need if you put it in the right place.

True, but the one I'd want would be a 50 BMG.

Those lens caps suck.......if you want the good stuff, get Butler Creek "Blizzard" caps. Tc6969, Cabela's has 'em.

Neat picture. Looks like he's on a roof at an airport somewhere, and look at the strange holes in the handguard near the bi-pod. Wonder what those are used for. Very off the shelf set-up. Makes me think this guy might be good and doesn't need super sniper 007 gear to turn off someone's lights if it came down to it.

can barely tell it's a Photoshop picture.

after looking at it again, it does look like a photoshop job...

Look at the shadows of the soldier's feet, and then the mag of the rifle...

That's crazy. I'll never know what's real and what's fake again. So, all of those nude Brittnay Spears picture I've been seeing aren't real either? [rolleyes]

I think this photo may be untouched and real.
It is the the USAF web page exactly like it is here.

Two light sources guys, one is natural sunlight, the other is a high intensity flash.

It's called fill flash.  A very valid and extremely usefull photographic technique for filling in shadow areas.  In that case especially to light up the soldiers face under the brim of his boonie hat.

The funky shadows are caused because there are too light sources.

I say it's a legitimate photo.

I think the perspective is off, the rifle does seem a little big, the edges look -odd-.
I still think it's a photoshop job...a good one, but still I have doubt.

It's not a photoshop pic, unless the Airforce happens to train guys to use it (It's on THEIR website)

Guys,

This is real, I linked it from the USAF web site. The pic is captioned as follows:

Master Sgt Patrick Owens looks across the runway of the 138th Fighter Wing, Tulsa Air National Guard, Tulsa Okla., while conducting counter sniper operations. Owens is a member of the 138th Security Forces Squadron. (U.S. Air Force photo by Tech. Sgt. Mark Moore)

The pic looks like a pro job cause it was shot by a pro. No photoshop here.

I thought it was interesting cause the Air Force is not known to be first in line when this kind of new hardware is issued, and the commercial scope, bipod and lenscaps all have that "retail" look. Other than the extra position on the selector, you could put this rig together at any decent sporting goods shop.

Betcha he knows how to shoot it, though...

Why? Because they have to buy their stuff at Kmart?

You think maybe he pulled that scope off his deer rifle from home?

I had an employee who was in an infantry squad in Desert Storm, he said quite a few of the guys had privately owned scopes mounted on their M16's.

Could that scope be any higher off the barrel????

Am I imagining things, or is that rifle's selector switch set to "SEMI"?

I had my Colt HBAR set up this way, but withour the cheekpeice. I hated it, but it might have been better with the cheekpice installed.

In any case, the scope mounted this way is really too high to get a decent zero at much less than 200yds, which is probably OK for this guy. The gun is pretty awkward when set up like this, IMO it doesn't handle very well.

Not only can the Guard buy their stuff at K-Mart, but they are allowed to mount that stuff on their issue weapon.  A big NO-NO in most actice duty units.

Well, now, that explains everything! Thanks.

Perhaps the new Office of Homeland Security can get them a bigger budget, now that Homeland Security is an "issue".

It's like DaMan says, the Guard (usually) doesn't care if you do this kind of stuff as long as you don't modify Gov't property. This guy probably owns the lower handguard the bipod is mounted to and reinstalls the issue one when he turns in his weapon, ditto for the scope and cheek piece.
During my years in the Guard I always had a Colt 3X scope on my rifle. I told people that asked about it that I was the "designated sniper" and nearly always got something like "Oh, I see" in response. They never asked who designated me and I never told them that I designated myself.

On a more practical note, the scope made finding "my" M16 MUCH easier even in a large stack of rifles. The only time the scope came off was for qualification. It would have been cool to fire it on the Qual. range but not hardly fair to the other guys.

Kinda like my work. I have found that if you carry a legal pad and takes notes, looking serious, you can go almost anywhere. No one ever asks you who you are or why you are there. They just assume you must be more important than they are.

With all the new paranoia, that will surely end.

It is  a Leupold for sure.  Gold ring around objective.  It is probably an LPS model.
No BDC (bullet drop compensator) and target turrets (for quick elevation and windage adjustments)= bought at PX out of ones own pocketbook.

Is the scope an overkill for the AR?...Should it be more appropriate to be on a .308 rifle?...  i.e. Rem 700PSS
