The Army Service Uniform is the replacement for the current Class A uniform, not the ACU.

I thought the ASU was the new dress uniform...

I'm pretty sure you have the ACU's confused with the Dress Greens. They're replacing the Greens with the Service Uniform. I think the Service Uniform is the same as the Blues that the soldiers at Arlington wear.

There are things I like better about the ACU, and some not so much. I like the position of the pockets better on the ACU, however I hate the velcro and miss the buttons.
I don't know how much the BDUs cost, but the ACUs are $80/set at clothing sales on post, a ridiculous price for a uniform that is supposedly supposed to last "6 months" in the field.

Maybe I got the name wrong but, I was told they are reassessing the velcro and some other issues.  When I get more info I will post it.  I'm sure that is a "new" replacement for the combat uniform.

They are extremely "hit or miss" on how long they last.  We had some guys go maybe a month before theirs ripped or shredded...others of us, ours lasted the entire deployment and 6mos afterwards.

I still wear the ones in Iraq for drill, absolutely nothing wrong with them.

And we got like 4 brand new sets before we left Iraq so I have like 8 sets of ACU's now.

I don't like the velcro at all.  I don't understand why they put it there.  It's not hard to go to MCSS and have the people sew on the patches, name tape, etc.

It's to "save us money" at least that was the story to start, but now that velcro is wearing out and they are selling veclcro "repair kits" i.e. replacement velcro that story has gone out the window.  Now the PEO party line is "an operational requirement for streilized unifroms."

OK -sure . . .

My PLT SGT had to talk to us about this on Friday. There have been rumors going around that the ACU is going away, or at least being redone in one way or another. There is nothing official about any changes as of yet however.

My name tape and US Army tape has a really hard time sticking.  One day I came to work call and someone said where's your name?  I looked down and it had fallen off.

Maybe I should see about that velcro repair kit...never heard of it before.

I tell you what:  I'm getting sick of seeing soldiers who don't care what they look like WEARING them!  Some folks around here look like they just rolled out of bed in them.  I'm not saying you have to have a starched and shined uniform (like -I- have to have), which is just nuts in a hazardous duty assignment, but gee, do you have to make your uniform look like a pair of pajamas?

Well, I guess it worked for the Vietnamese...

It was so stupid to not have the branch and name sewn on.  I can understand the rank and somewhat the patches (just barely) because people change rank and its easier to take off that way....

But no one hardly changes their name for the love of god, no one changes branches and keeps the same uniform!

No, but when you're questioning and releasing Hajji, do you really want him running back knowing what your name is?  The interpreters here are rather glad to have Velcro.  Sure, nothing bad ever happens in Kosovo, but those Iranian and Saudi-funded mosques here (I call them AQ Recruiting Centers) DO get a lot of business...

I'm just SAYIN'...

You DID notice the part in RED, right?  I'm not referring to folks just getting off patrol, but just plain SLOBS who don't look like they take any pride in themselves at all.

I am NOT saying go back to starch and Kiwi, but at least try to look like you represent your country when you're on a multi-national mission like here.

A lot of guys (not me) re-wear the same uniform all week or even longer.  Often times they leave it crumpled on the floor after work.  So it gets wrinkled and messed up.

Another thing is that I bet a lof of people don't shake out and hang up their uniform immediately after it gets out of the dryer.

Besides the fabric is so weak they feel like pajamas....

I personally hate the velcro. People who really need to have removable name tapes and such found a way to do it. Its not like we all are about to get dropped where Americans aren't "supposed" to be....

That would be me. haha I'll make a pair last all week if im not inthe motor pool or in the field.  Also, if (when) i pick up my ACUs off the floor in the morning and throw them on they look pretty much the same as when I take a fresh pair off the hanger.  I personally love the ease of use!

I've noticed that there are about three different styles of velcro.  Some lasts a long time and is tightly woven, some is loose and unravels a bit, some is very thin-fibered and quickly turns into little fuzzy balls that get in the way.  That's the thing I dislike about the ACUs.  Other than that, I like the feel, the pockets and the look.

Starch? You are starching your uniform. Unless some things have changed starching the uniform damaged the IR properities of the uniform. Starching was strictly against regs.

6/4/2007 1:31:02 PM EDT
[#32]
There are no IR capabilities to my issue uniform.  I wear khaki BDUs with SECURITY in 6" letters on the back.  I'm force protection, not .mil.  We are required to have pressed utilities and shined black boots.  The army press shop run by AAFES starches the shit out of them.

Since the contract we are on was written before desert boots were part of the uniform, our companies refuse to let us wear them, even though the uniform regs have changed at least twice.  I wear spit-shined black jungle boots.

Since we have to wear a duty belt, tucked-in 2 pocket BDUs would be preferable, but no, we can't have that.  Oh well.

We return you to the thread about the Anti-Couch Uniform...

but you have a bigger problem, all the molle gear. Changing the acu pattern for uniforms would be realtively simple, changing all the molle gear in a reasonable time would be almost impossible. Then what you would have is a different uniform, covered by all the acu molle gear, alot like the desert uniforms at the start of the war with the camo body armor and olive drab rucks, ect..
The army must have hundreds of millions invested in all the new gear.

The uniform is not meant to be worn wrinkled, filthy, and just picked up off the floor of the closet.  I state it is not to be starched.  My khaki uniform is to be starched and pressed, and my boots shined, which is just plain silly.  We should have the khaki ACU-cut uniform and desert boots, with the blouse tucked in to wear the pistol belt with belt keepers.  Of course, if you are carrying the rifle, you are wearing a pistol belt with an empty mag pouch, empty holster, and have your mags jammed into a BDU pocket.    A lot of our FP guys look like shit, too.

I don't like the new ACUs, just having one set of cammies that is sub par where ever it goes. VS two different sets that are ideal for what environment they are in. I'll take two sets please.

Why I don't like them
Wrong choice of colors for the camo part
velcro is for tards and 3rd graders
searching for misplaced patches pisses me off.
Feel sloppy and unprofessional in ithem.
