So, my buddy calls me and says that he wants to tell me something that's on the weird side.  My bud is a no-nonsense kinda guy and doesn't ever bother me with stupid crap, so his call piqued my interest.  Here it goes:  My buddy reported that he's had a BLACK goldfish for awhile and that about 1 1/2 years ago he introduced three ORANGE colored goldfish.  Well, it seems that his BLACK goldfish is now changing colors and becoming ORANGE.  He's somewhat perplexed as to why the BLACK goldfish is changing and how this is happening.  Seems like that black goldfish has some sort of chameleon like properties.  I told him I'd post it here  just to see what the AR15.com hive mind can come up with.  What say you guys?

My bud said, "See, the Man is trying to assimilate my black goldfish!"  We both just busted up laughing.

All racial jokes aside, the black goldfish's transformation is weird.  Aint' it??

ETA:  My buddy and I are both Americans of Latino descent, so that means we can't be racist...right?  LOL.  Whatever.

Just so everybody knows and doesn't start crying bloody murder, my ETA was meant to be SARCASTIC.  Get it?  I don't give a crap what your race, nationality, creed or religious background is as long as you are not a dumb ass, ultra left libral, a gun hater, don't vote or whine too much.  Everybody comprende?  Good.

Wow, this one took a turn, didn't it?

To answer your question, yeah it seems weird. But if they are healthy...

That is weird.. I'd only heard of them growing bigger if you put them in a larger body of water, but never this. I would be tempted to try it out, but I don't have a great track record with fish.

I wouldn't worry unless it starts cross dressing.

Completely normal for goldfish to do that.  In actuality, all goldfish are black (or dark grayish) when they hatch out.  They don't develop the other colors until they are a few months old.  But, they can continue changing throughout their lives.

The real Q should be do they taste different? You know the gold fish as opposed to the black fish.. Also do you use mustard or mayo?

I have a goldfish that was gold when I got it, but turned white. Color change is normal with goldfish.

I saw a black goldfish once.   The piranha ate it though.

I've had two goldfish that swim upside down and go crazy. One did die but I still have the other one and he actually constantly floats upside but IS NOT dead, I have to knock on the glass to wake him up I think that is wierd! None of mine have changed color though.

I think this happens when their bowels become obstructed.
I've had it happen to a number of fish.
One good dump and they're floating right, again.

I want open an endoscopy clinic for goldfish.

I'll give your fish a real good checkout.  I guarantee you will always get a fish back when you come to retrieve your pet.  I won't guarantee it's the same fish.  USPS money orders and cash only, please, payable upon receipt of fish exam.

Goldfish often change colors as they age.  Black or blue fish (other than Black Moors) are often on their way to some more common shade.  Likely just a coincidence.

It's not so much about obstructed bowels as it's about them getting gas.  Fancy goldfish have very contorted bodies.  High protein diets give goldfish gas.  Fancy goldfish with contorted bodies have trouble passing the gas.  Go buy some fresh spinach, boil(blanch) it long enough to sanitize and soften, then hang it in your tank.  Chances are your fish will eat it, then later you'll see poop with bubbles and spinach.  Fancies are hard to keep healthy because of this.  This is why we no longer have fancies.

Interesting, it is a fancy too. My regualr skinny goldfish has neevr had an issue and I have him for about 4 yrs or more. That's pretty long for a goldfish.

Yep.

I've got one like that at the moment.  It pissed off a couple fish that were bigger and meaner than it, and they pretty much beat the crap out of it; it's healed up now but in the process got itself upside down.

Medicine is helping, but it takes a little time.
