The dog went running down the stairs again tonight; she was barking and growling quite loudly, clearly smelled/heard something outside. I went downstairs with her and checked the yard, didn't see anything but the dog was going still growling... If I were to see someone out in the yard and night, what should I do? Confront them? - It is important to note that the house is situated on several acre's of land, and the yard is surrounded by woods... |
Arm yourself, secure family/pets, get phone ready for 911, observe from safety, confront only if necessary. Otherwise, be the best witness you can possibly be. Confrontation as a first alternative is almost always the worst plan. |

Run up behind him and yell "Give me your money motherfucker!!" That's sure to confuse the intruder, turning the tables and giving you an advantage. For maximum effect, pop a few viagra beforehand and wear a clown suit. (Minus the crotch area) Seriously, try to avoid it. Stay in your home, lights out if you can, and wait. Either call the PD before or after the shooting... If you feel he might steal something, you could always open up a window and speak some naughty language before you let off a few rounds. He's be crazy not to haul ass. |

It was probably some critter, anyway. I agree with all the above . . . except, I'd not be afraid to let whoever/whatever is out there know there's someone home. I'd have my wife and daughter go to our "safe room" and I'd turn on all my outdoor floodlights. Then, me and my lab would go to the second floor with my million+ candle power, cordless spotlight & my AR. There's not much that could escape notice from up there (at my place, anyway). I'd probably "call out" and tell 'em to hightail it off my property, too. Heaven help anyone who tried to break in after such an obvious display of someone being home - and prepared. They'd better have packed their lunch! That's all I have to say. *I might also add that I've come into possession of several small surveillance cameras, which I'm going to install later this spring. Things like that can make a HUGE difference and give you a tremendous advantage: enabling you to monitor several locations, at once. If I had THEM installed, my answer above would likely be much different. |
