Does anyone know just what is the differance between a 3-season and a 4-season tent?  I have always wondered about this.

3 season usually means spring, summer and fall. those tents are usually made with more ventalation, and a weaker support structure.

i have a 3 season tent that is for fall, winter and spring. no vents other that the 2 doors. a rain/snow fly that extends to the ground, and has a vestibule for cold-weather cooking, storage, etc. and  a super-strong pole system to accomodate the weight of snow.

4 season simply implies a compramise in all features, creating a "one tent fits all" shelter.

happy camping!

fattym4, Thanks for the info.  I guess that the tent I have is a 3-season.  Although, here in NC I don't really have to worry about getting too much snow down on the coast.

 Thanks,   Vulcan94

The four season tents usually have stronger poles and are more strongly braced to resist snow and high winds.

Where most 3 season tents can get away with 2 or 3 poles, 4 season tents have 4 or 5.  This is also to help brace the tent for snow fall.  Also there is gererally less ventilation in a 4 season tent which makes it horrible in the summer.  Some 4 season also have a "hard top" for the snowfall.  If you plan on camping in the winter it's a good idea to have 2 different tents, one for the winter, one for the rest of the year.
