...are they supposed to be underwater, or what?

so why, when SpongeBob cries, do tears shoot out his eyes? Wouldn't they just seep out and be absorbed by the surrounding water?

and what about fires burning, and so on?

Pssst - he's not really real.

All the sponges I've seen in the ocean don't move around or talk, and they certainly don't have arms and legs and wear pants.  So realism is probably not a primarily concern for the show.

That is what makes it so entertaining.

I hated when my son first started watching spongebob, but now I look for all the little stupid things that don't add up, like them being under water....

What about the episode with the gorrilla?

Spongebob starts asking what a gorilla is doing under water.

The gorilla mumbles an excuse calls his horse and says 'They're on to us!' and leaves.

Even the show has a sense of humor about it not being real.

It's just a great show.   And sometimes, there's humor built into it that's subtle, but of
an adult nature.   And most kids would never catch it.

Not so subtly...where do they live?  Bikini Bottom.   Tell me there's no adult content THERE.

The Spongebob movie is hysterically funny.   I recommend it if you haven't seen it yet.

"Ride the Hasselhoff"....

And one of the episodes (the one where Sandy has to do a bunch of extreme sport things before hibernation) had Pantera laying down some HEAVY riffs. That show is cool, I think I watch it more than my kids.

Fish with legs.
Underwater fire.
Underwater beach.
Sunsets
Squidward playing a clarinet
Etc.

Still cool!

When I was in Bahrain we sat all day in this room with our gear staged waiting for something to happen. There was a tv in the room, and it only got three channels, one of which was almost always playing sponge bob.

Now there were two staff sargeants who walked into the room regularly, one of which hated spongebob and all cartoons with a passion, but specifically spongebob, the other who was almost always wearing a spongebob shirt.

so a normal day for us consisted of:

WHY THE FUCK ARE YOU WATCHING SPONGEBOB!!! TURN THAT CARTOON SHIT OFF!

Aye SSGT

WHAT THE HELL? SPONGEBOBS ON!!!! WHY THE HELL ARE YOU WATCHING THE NEWS!!!! CHANGE IT!

Roger that SSGT

I THOUGHT I TOLD YOU IDIOTS TO TURN THAT KID SHIT OFFF!

Yes SSGT

TURN TO CHANNEL 3 THIS IS A GREAT EPISODE!!! HE GETS A PENCIL AND DRAWS THIS DUDE WHO STEALS THE PENCIL AND RUNS RAMPANT CHANGE IT TO SPONGE!!!!!

Will do SSGT

Etc. etc.

Somehow neither of them were in the room at the same time, we figured it was either some sort of trick or else if they both entered at once the world would end.

At least there is enough adult humor that I can laugh while watching it with my kids.

Best episode is when Patrick & Spong Bob make fun of dumb ol Texas until Sandy goes ape shit on them & they run screaming like little girls.

I laugh every time I see that one.   My son is 9 so we have been watching S.B. since it came out.

I think they insinuated in the talent show episode that Sandy has a secret thing for Gary and his poetry.

My favorite is the camping episode where Squidward gets owned by the sea-bear.

"Oh, what's the worst that can happen?  it's not like I'm going to blow up or anything."
"Worse!  They'll go to your thighs!"
(Zoom out to show Squidward with huge legs and a startled expression.)
"And then you'll blow up."
*BOOM*

Good show.
