Looking back through history, can you think of an example of a government/nation


that has gone into serious decline (departure from founding ideas to the detriment of itself) and then reversed

that decline and returned to core fundamentals?




this is a rather simplistic question and probably badly worded, but work with me here.

Some people have argued that 19th century Britain was an example of enlightened liberalism; the gold standard, free trade, repeal of anti-Catholic legislation, etc.  Of course they also got involved in a whole bunch of wars, set up concentration camps to try to eradicate the Boers, etc., so I'm not too sure the argument is completely valid.  Aside from that example, you'd probably have to search pretty far and wide to find a country that restores itself without first bottoming out.
