What's wrong with this one?

Yesterday afternoon, I'm in the front yard with our Cocker Spaniel, letting her run around the cul de sac chasing squirrels. I saw this one laid out under a tree in our yard and checked it out. There were some flies buzzing around it's head, so I figured it was dead. Nope, after a closer look I see it's still breathing.

My dog came over and sniffed around, then left to chase some that were moving a little faster. So here we are, eighteen hours later, and it's still laying there. It's breathing, and occasionally will twitch, but just pretty much lays there and stares.

I thought maybe it nibbled on something that had poison in it, like a lawn treatment or even a mouse or rat trap (nither of which we see around here very often). Wow, it's taking a long time to expire, but at least the flies are gone. It's not like I'm going to take it to a vet, but what the heck is up with the little guy? Old age? An attempt at suicide by dog?

Anyone want to offer up some opinions?

This is part of the mating ritual of this extremely rare subspecies of squirrel. There do not appear to be any other squirrels within earshot of its tiny, high-pitched moans.  If you want the squirrel to go away, you're going to have to...

well, you know what you have to do.  Wait till the sun goes down, and she'll scamper right off after a few minutes.

As a vet, I would advise you to give it a proctological exam to find out the cause of death/near death.  If your finger comes out brown, it wasn't food born or poison.  If it comes out red...then poison most likely.
Ok...I am not a Vetinarian, but a Veteran.

It may have fallen and broken it's neck, it may be sick, or it may be poisoned.  Anyway you slice it, it doesn't look long for this world.  Probably should give it the .22LR send-off.

I know it's difficult to tell since you're human but you're living in a rough squirrel neighborhood.  That little guy got jacked.  I bet you won't find any acorns in his pockets.

This is true...I have seen it before.

I caught this guy jacking up another squirrel last year in my backyard.  Gangs of them have been known to roam my neighborhood before I arrived.

Broken Back, put it out of it's misery so it does not get eaten alive.

And I hate squirrels for the holes they have chewed into my house.

I have some squirrel repellent ready for them, in .22cal

+1 on the broken neck.  But why waste a bullet when you could just step on his head?

Or how about putting him in an empty ammo can, and just before closing the lid, spray a bunch of starting fluid (ether) into the can?

Well, this story has come to an end. I called the animal control officer for the town and he came over (believe me when I tell you, his day ain't all that busy). Right before he arrived, Rocky headed to Squirrel Heaven. Good thing, as the .22 solution wouldn't work around here, especially with a next door neighbor who gets a little crazy where animals are concerned.

I sure appreciate all the reasonable and compassionate answers though. Some of you guys should really think about looking for ways to alleviate some of the suffering in this world. Maybe open the Dr. Mengele Clinic for Veterinarian Studies.

You're getting funny.

Atypical mod behavior because you are not in the process of banning someone or locking down a topic.

My guess as the squirrel's demise?  Too much fermented fruit.  Poor fella is DRUNK OFF HIS ASS.  Then he got jacked and his acorns stolen..it IS a rough neighborhood.

I believe one of the higher reasons for squirrel mortality is falls.

He/she/it probably fell out of a tree or from a utility line and broke something important.

no .22 necessary in that condition

standard garden shovel.  one wack to do the job, a second for knowing the job is done right.

or the old trappers trick, so as not to damage a pelt.  step on the rib cage so it can't breath and it quickly suffocates.  (don't look at me like that, you let the little fooker suffer for 24 hours already)

Yup. After closer examination by the animal control guy, it appears our friend took a pellet or BB to the neck. It wasn't evident at first, as the fur covered the wound.

After observing the rest of his pack, they seem none deterred, and are continuing to roam the neighborhood at will. And I sit here and wait, wondering who will be next?
