Looks more like hazing. The Russians kill dozens every year with this crap when bad, inexperienced NCOs with no leadership ability abuse troops. Unsurprisingly, most try to avoid military service in Russia if the possibly can.

The Russian Army has some very serious issues involving hazing. It's not uncommon for large groups of new conscripts (mostly all poor kids from rural areas) to go AWOL due to the brutal hazing.
