I want to put an outdoor ceiling fan on my lanai, but not sure how to power it. There are no existing light fixtures on the ceiling. The house has vaulted ceilings so accessing from inside is out of the question. Is there a way to mount the fan on the ceiling but run the electricity from the wall mounted sconce? I don't mind sacrificing the existing exterior light to accomplish the project.

Wait...you have an exterior light but don't have a place to put the fan?

Simple solution.  Remove the light and mount the fan in its place.  Be sure to purchase a fan that is outdoor rated and has a light kit.

Will take you about an hour or less to install.  Just be sure to turn off the power first.

ETA:  Nevermind...I misread your post.

Do you know if any of the wiring at the light is hot all the time, or is it only hot when the light is turned on?

fan gonna look funny on the wall next to the door.

PLus you'd have to dodge the blades when using the backdoor.

back on topic-

Get an electrician to fish the power to the middle of the porch.

You can either have and electrician snake a wire to the new location, or you can go to surface mount raceway like they use in offices. Doesn't look too swift, but it's cheap and easy.

Like me.

I was thinking about that. I am planning on covering the ceiling with bamboo anyway so it would cover it up. I guess the downside would be resale value. i will look into the electrician.

Well you edited it sometime between when I hit 'quote' and I hit 'submit'.

But I saw it after it went up, and decided to leave it anyway.

wouldn't a wiring electrician be better?  In any case more power to you.

A surface mounted raceway will look like ass.  Hire somebody and get it done with concealed wiring.
