Is it just locally (Austin), or has the word "emo" become the latest, greatest buzz word?  It seems to be popping up everywhere...  Kind of like "gravitas" was a few years ago.

Emo is very common, and has been very common for several year among the teenage population.  Emo is like the new "Goth" except they're whiny.

Its becoming all the rage with the suburban kids.

It has taken the place of the usual "punk" or metalhead crowds with a more lathargic and whiny replacement.

Decades ago when the first major goth scene hit, there was an emphasis on old British literature and related aesthetics.  As music completely overcame what defined "goths," any notion of academic ties were discarded.

However, this new "emo" replacement makes it "cool" to be "out."  Being "excluded" from the mainstream, of course, gives you more to whine about.  However, with less emphasis on "cool," academics have become less of a "nerd" thing.

Many teachers that work in other districts tell me that their "goth and emo" kids are doing quite well, but the "cutting" thing is throwing schools for a loop... they have to do something about it, even if it is just for show.

Oh well, at least they aren't out raising hell and cutting other people.

Remember the "out" AKA ghey being the buzzword and popular thing?

Emo is some what not as popular now. There is still the standard emo kids, and then theres the kids that "emo"is just a dress style and etc. Whats popular now (and has been for a bit) is whats called "scene" kids. Polka dots and headbands galore for the girls, tight clothes for the guys. Bandanas, pokemon, care bears, robots, dinosaurs ("cute" little cartoon ones), beads(girls). Scene is more about the music (originaly), but its becoming more a fashion contest, who could have the best hair (20 different colors in it sometimes), who has the best accesories (plenty of them), who has the coolest clothes, who can pull it off the best, etc etc. And add in the ego, which is extremly HUGE. Not all, but a lot of the "scene" kids pretty much have the additude that they are all hot shot, and other kids arent as cool as they are, and generaly look down on others. Real assholes sometimes. Thats just a breif generality of "scene".

I have always wondered where the hell this became "cool."

Within certain subcultures (youth), there was a fad for girls to openly experiment.  This stereotype that it is "cool" to be "out" across the board is outright wrong, for what I've seen.

You'll still get shit on in all of the schools I've been in within the past few years.  Other faculty agree, and are trying to change it.

In 2000+ when I worked at a place being gay was the way to get promoted, they all would go to the gay bars, was as many guys as women in that crowd.  Less of them out there now.

Private business with private practices... not representative of general subcultures, unless it is a business based on such a subculture (I have "Hot Topic" from the mall in mind... geared towards a certain subculture.)

Yep, being "out" shouldn't be part of any business practice, for or against them.  Unless its like... gay porn.  Then it might help.
