Got charged a whopping 6% extra for using my American Express credit card, but was never told of this even though I placed it over the phone. Don't see it on their site either. I only noticed after looking at the packing slip where it is labeled as "Misc Charges"

American Express has good customer service.  If they charged you extra for using your Amex card and weren't told of it, call and let them know.  Merchants aren't supposed to do those things.  A lot of companies have gotten around their merchant agreements by saying all of their prices posted reflect a cash discount, with the actual price being 2-6% higher depending on what kind of card you use to pay.

You can complain if they charge you for something you didn't agree to.

Charging more to accept Credit Cards violates the merchant agreement with the CC company, call American Express and report them.

And sellers don't usually like AMEX.

There is no excuse for a 6% service charge. It's just a scam.

Some businesses get a surcharge this high for Amex.  The rates you cited are for well established vendors.

If a company wants the convenience of using CC (it IS a convenience for them, they get funds up front), they have to abide by the CC vendor agreement.  Adding $ for using a card is bad juju that the card companies take seriously.

The trick is not that they charge more for using a CC, its that they give a cash discount which happens to be the advertised price. A small disclaimer stating that is all that is needed.

Store I worked for got charged an additional 4% if you punched in an AMEX transaction instead of swiping it. When you're selling guns at 5% over cost it kinda hits the ol' bottom line.

No FFL on this planet sells guns at only 5% above cost.  If they do, they're idiots and won't be in business very long.

I used to own a motorcycle performance shop and paid a 35 cent transaction and 2.5% fee to do Visa and MC. AMEX was 4% by itself....I declined to accept them. I didn't want to pay for all of your free vacations and plane tickets

Luckily, all I got was an M44 so it only came out to an extra $3 & change so I'm not bothering but the fact that they don't state it openly pissed me off. I'll just not order from them again.
