My girlfriend has a 94 mercury cougar with the 3.8 v6 with some engine problems.  First off it has a studder in the engine when idling.  I put fuel injector cleaner in it but no change.  Plugs and wires next?

Next, after the engine is warm and you drive for a little while and come to a stop, the temp gauge will go up slightly and the oil pressure will increase just a little bit, then the engine will start idling very rough.  It stays that way until you get moving again then the temp will go down and everything will be fine until you stop again. Any ideas?   thanks guys

You might want to have a mechanic check the computer controls first.  And replacing the plugs and wires won't hurt, if it's been more than 50,000 miles since they were last changed.

Check your radiator, a good flush would most likely be necessary.  In addition, check to see that your thermostat is still in good working order.  The thermo is fairly cheap (about $10) but if it is stuck, it can cause the engine temp to climb when at a stop.  Also, make sure the fan is operating correctly.  A faulty fan can cause an engine to overheat when stopped also.

What kind of shape are the battery and alternator in? If either isn't up to snuff, the voltage may be sagging enough to affect the idle, gauge readings, etc. In particular, it's quite common to experience misfires and poor drivability right before the battery croaks.

The battery died about a month ago.  I charged it but I believe it is pretty old.  Good thinking.  My f250 diesel does some weird things before the batteries go.  I have an extra battery in the garage so I will throw that in.

Stalling at idle can also mean some dry rotted vacuum lines. I'd make sure those were all okay as well.
