I'm watching "Reign Of Fire" a movie about a near future event where dragons have come out of hibernation and more or less torched the Earth.
Pretty well done movie.
I see a lot of characters running around with small arms - AKs, FALs, bolt actions.
IMO, damn near any non-crew served weapon is going to be useless against a dragon.
What say you?

For scale.

That movie is just silly, it's like the dragons have force shields protecting them.

If it is made of flesh and bone, enough rifles are going to take it down.

I figure the Navy would have been able to put a hell of a hurt on them.
Radar guided CIWS would make a real mess of things.

I liked it.  Sure, it had many holes in it....but I liked it like I like all dragon movies.  It's a bit of a failing for me, I have to see movies with dragons in them.  Even pieces of absolute shit like Eragon.  Reign of Fire was a good bit better to many of the other dragon movies out there, though.

They eat freakin ASH?!

Because the dragon would eat the guy with the glock and the trigger woulg get pulling inside its stomach and it would kaboom?

Well, dragons are like living airplanes, right? So a 50BMG should be fine.

Oh, and on a (somewhat) more serious note, I think that a full-power rifle round would be a good start. 7.62x51mm in quantity should do nicely until the big guns could come to bear.

Since were talking about hypothetical animals I will hypothesize that many modern weapon systems would have problems tracking/locking on.  So that would render things like SAM’s and AAM’s useless until the R&D boys get on the case.  In the interim weapon systems like the A-10 Thunderbolt II (warthog), AH-64 Apache attack helicopters and basically any manually aimed/guided missile or auto cannon would make short work of the dragon threat.  If they have some kind to ‘nesting ground’ tactical nukes would be a viable option.

As a species we've more or less ruled this planet for thousands of years; the sudden appearance of large fire breathing lizards would merely make for some interesting reactive targets.

I still don't get that movie.

The dragons eat ash. Ash has little, if any, chemical energy. They create ash by unleashing a huge amount of energy, in the form of fire, and then eat ash.

So how the hell does that work? It makes about as much thermodynamic sense as The Matrix.

A-10's in the air, F-15's, F/A18's, AH64's, Mi-24/35's, SU-25's, etc.

CIWS, ZSU-23-4's, ZSU-57-2's, yadda, yadda, yadda.

If that doesn't get the job done, I'm pretty sure enough .38's and .22's in the hands of Arfcommers will take them down.

IOW, unless there's several hundred thousand of them, with a damn good plan, they don't stand a chance against the most destructive species this planet hs ever seen - humans.

Have you never eaten ash?? Seriously, it's quite tasty and filling. Thermodynamics? Meh, all I know is a good heapin of ash is like pancakes, only more powdery.

You guys obviously don't know about dragon skin.  It's the bestest armor on the planet, and the mean old dod won't let our troops wear it.  Those dragons would have the natural version of it, thus they would be impossible to kill with anything but nukes.

I have the same problem with Aliens-chestburster emerges about the size of a puppy, but is about the size of a Rottweiler within a few hours.

I liked the movie and own it.

I suspend my disbelief and watch it for entertainment. (something many here apparently don't do)

I agree that in the movie small arms were basically worthless.

I believe a .50 might have been employed against the Alpha male when it attacked the convoy, to no avail.

I did wonder what a mini-gun would have done against it.

While most small arms smaller than .30 caliber would have been more or less useless, the .50 should have torn up any dragon it was used against in very short order.

I think that when dealing with a dragon, you have to follow the rule of "if you can't put one big hole in it, put a whole bunch of smaller holes in it."
Meaning, if you can't hit it with the 120mm main gun of the tanks in the convoy, open up with the .50BMG and bring it down by putting as much lead in the air as you can.
One thing that did make sense in the movie was using nets to entangle the dragons, so they couldn't fly and then dispatch them on the ground.

my 7 year old step son said the reason the bullets didn't bring it down was because the heat of the dragon's firebreath melted the bullets in flight
