www.10nbc.com/index.asp?template=item&story_id=22271 RIT student arrested for having guns in dorm room 4/17/07 Two illegal guns were found inside a RIT dorm room on Tuesday, just one day after a mass killing at Virginia Tech University stunned the nation. Jonathan Hackenburg, 22, is a student at RIT and is in police custody, charged with unlawful possession of two assault style weapons. Monroe County Sheriffs found two illegal assault rifles inside his dorm room at the RIT Inn and Conference Center. And inside his car, police found 320 rounds of ammunition. It all started around 11:15 Tuesday morning when an employee heard what sounded like someone racking a gun inside Jonathan Hackenburg's dorm room. That staff member called RIT security and they called the police. Police quickly found two illegal assault rifles in Hackenburg's room. The 22-year-old admitted to police that the Stag-15 and AR-15 rifles were his, but he told investigators that he just assembled them. Police say they've been told Hackenburg is a gun collector. No live ammunition was found in the guns. It is a crime to have a gun on school grounds in the State of New York. “He did indicate that he has federal firearms licenses in New Jersey and that he properly purchased these weapons. However, crossing the state line and possessing them in New York State is a violation of the law,” says Monroe County Sheriff, Patrick O’Flynn. Hackenburg has been suspended from RIT and now faces criminal charges. He was arraigned in Henrietta Town Court. News 10NBC spoke with Bill Gunther, who is the Hotel Manager at the RIT Inn and Conference Center. He says Jonathan Hackenburg is well known and liked by the staff at the hotel. Gunther says Hackenburg is not a troubled young man and has a lot of friends at RIT. Police say Hackenburg has no prior criminal record. E-Mail this story to a friend |
