He has always ran his mouth just a little too much but last night he went and said he started Ranger School but hurt his knee while jumping out of an airplane.
He WAS at Georgia Military College in the 60's.
He said he and 9 other buddies went to Ranger School together. He said he and one other one got hurt in training. He said the other 8 got killed in 'Nam.

I just KNOW he is lying. How do I know? His lips were moving.

How do I find out if he even went to Ranger School?

Ask him what his class number is.  Someone else will be along to tell you where you can get that cross-referenced if he is indeed able to think up an answer.

You can start by asking for the names of some of his buddies.  Then go here to see if their names are on the wall:

Call GMC. They can easily tell you if 8 of their alumni from the same class died in Vietnam.

However, this is a cornerstone of most poser stories. "There were witnesses, but they all died."

Ask him what the five points of contact in a PLF are.

Did they have ERB's back then? If so it should say it on his ERB.

Ask me Ask me!!!!   I know!

Contact points for Parachute Landing Falls (PLFs)

The Parachute Landing Fall consists of five points of contact; 1) the balls of your feet, 2) the calf muscle, 3) the thigh muscle, 4) the buttocks, and 5) the pushup muscle.

...and ERB is just short for Edgar Rice Burroughs, right?

Can I be a Ranger now too ???

Is it really worth calling him out though?  He's sounds like he's full of sh*t and other people will realize that soon enough.  You may end up just alienating your sister for picking on poor hubby.   (on the other hand it might be fun to watch him squirm...)

There are some very knowledgable folks here, some who currently work at the RTB.

POst an intro first though, otherwise they will not acknowledge you.

can i ask what would be the point even if he were lying about what he did? Would this not cause undo tension in the family? Would this not affect your relationship with your sister? I think there are more things to look at other than proving him wrong.

It's my wife's sister's 3rd husband. She can really pick 'em! There is no way she's ever going to leave this one because the WHOLE family told her she was crazy for marrying his old ass. She'll keep him because her pride is at stake.

He's the one that talks through EVERY frickin' family meal. NO one gets to talk because of his cologne wearing, gold chain sporting, fleece pull-over-wearing-with-the-zipper unbuttoned-and-no-shirt-on-underneath-ass.

Ask him what transitional period he attended in-country to be transferred from LRRP (now LRCCU) to a Ranger identifier.

Depending on the year and his MOS and TIC, post the results here and we'll easily feel him out.  It isn't hard when schools are questioned.

Better yet, ask him to repeat the Ranger Creed.  If he says he forgot it, he's a bald-faced liar and that's all the proof you'll need.

I thought Rangers were dead between the end of Korea and Nam, thus no school..?

Don't know, LRRP Company Command book stated something to that effect.

See when the damn school opened wouold be my start.

They were, then re-classified as LRRP, then back to Rangers serving as SF (SOG, 5th (IIRC)).  That's the intent of the question, as few would know the classes, much less the year.

Read Six Silent Men  by Reynel Martinez or Colnel Robert W. Black's memoirs, A Ranger Born or Joe Leppelman:  Blood on the Risers:  An Airborne Soldier's Thirty-five Months in Vietnam.

These are three self-described, self-written biographies I simply cannot recommend enough.  If you honestly want to know a trigger man's experience in what is today's modern SOG (Army), these are novels that will open your eyes to the true definition of hero, valor, and sacrifice stemming from the 1960 to 1970 in-country experience.  I cannot imagine any interest in military reading without these.

1.  Understand that your sister is just as much a loser as her husband;
2.  Appreciate that although you can't choose your relatives, you can choose your conduct.

One day, my late wife asked me how I could have such a great relationship with her mother when historically, all of my mother-in-law's friends became her enemies.  My response was simple.  I concluded that I would never be around the mother-in-law long enough to be disagreeable or to stand on my principles.

Your borther in law and sister are losers.  Spend less time around them.  Very simple.

Gosh, where'd she find a keeper like that?

Unless the whole family believes he shit, don't bother. Even if you called him out on the Ranger thing, he'd start up next on some classified Special Ops stories.

Except for the fact that being parachutist qualified is not a requirement to attend ranger school.  But he sounds like a poser to me.

I worked with a guy that claimed to be a Ranger once, I asked him about Ranger school and he said the usual, it was tough and I was one of the only ones in my class to make it, blah blah blah...so I asked him what the third obstacle of the Darby Queen was, and he asked me with a stupid look on his face "whats the Darby Queen?".

What IS the third obstace of the Darby Queen you might ask? How the hell should I know...

Tell him you saw a special about them on the History Channel, it was a special about war heroes.

Ask him...

"Did Sgt. Rutger really hold off all of those Vietnamese while ya'll were tending to the injured?"

He will answer affirmative or negative. Then you will know the truth, because I just made that crap up. Bait him with some BS.

why care?  My best friend's husband is the same way.  He's only a few years older than I am but he was in special forces in Nam.

When he starts in I just put my hand up and say 'yea yea' and change the subject.  I cut him off.

Who cares?

If you find out that he didn't, he'll claim that his class was classified for some reason.

Nutjobs who lie about stuff like this are everywhere.  It doesn't do any good to "debunk" them... they always have a cute counter, and those who are going to believe them are going to believe them, and everyone else already knows (or can quickly figure out) that he's full of it.

Idiots like this aren't worth any of your time or attention.  When you give it to them, by trying to "study up" on their stories, you're giving them the attention that they want and encouraging them.

Usually if a guy keeps bragging about that kind of subject........he's lying.  Most vets have to have their stories dragged out of them.  He's not worth the effort!  IMHO

The current Ranger School was established in the 1950s.

After the Korean War-era Ranger Companies were disbanded, the Army determined that there was an on-going need for Ranger training to be disseminated throughout the Army by officer and NCO graduates of the Ranger School.

Over time, it evolved into a leadership school (learning how to be a leader and a follower under difficult and trying circumstances, under pressure and physical distress).

Maybe he forgot the 5 points, or got the order mixed up, hence the injury?
