I understand that shipping something is a fairly easy task, but I’m curious what the consensus is here on this site.

Selling a firearm is something I have never done, as it is a painful experience

However, I am thinking about selling a lower and would like to hear how you do it.
Talking to my father this morning advised me to ship it FedEx next day air. It would run about $40-50+

Is that really necessary?

I was thinking more along the lines of priority mail with the works. Insured, signature, delivery conformation etc) and cost about $15 bucks.

Opinions?

AFIK, firearms may not be shipped via USPS. The rest is up to the policies of the carrier you choose. I usually go UPS ground. Remember you have to ship to an FFL dealer.

Does it have a serial #?  Or is it just a blank forging?  Because if it has a serial#, it is a FIREARM and requires FFL processing for sale interstate.  If it is in your state, other laws may apply since it appears you live in IL...

Yes. it will be shipped to an FFL only.

It's my understanding that you can ship long guns via USPS as a non FFL.  Non FFLs can't ship handguns via USPS.

Be advised, there is usually some dipshit in the store that has their own ideas about the legalities involved and the company's policy. Don't let them give you a line of crap. I can't say anything for the other carriers but UPS just requires that the gun be unloaded (DUH). Seeing as how it's just a lower and therefore CAN'T be loaded, you should have no issues as long as you remind the zit-faced, no-testicled, commie, hoplophobe behind the counter that his irrational fears do not equal company policy.

I didn't know that. That proves the old saying that free advice is worth slightly less than what you paid for it.

You can ship long-guns via USPS.  Just insure the package for its value, and when they ask, "anything liquid, fragile, or potentially hazardous?"  Just say, "NO."

You will have to ship it an FFL if it's going across state lines.  You should request a copy of the FFL's license first, or at the very least, do an online search on the ATF website to make sure the FFL is current.

That's it.  Simple.

(this is not legal advice).

Wrong, you may ship a long gun anywhere it is legal.  A handgun must be ffl shipped.

I thought this would get a direct answer right away.

I'm suprised.

B7) May a nonlicensee ship a firearm through the U.S. Postal Service?[Back]

A nonlicensee may not transfer a firearm to a non-licensed resident of another State. A nonlicensee may mail a shotgun or rifle to a resident of his or her own State or to a licensee in any State. The Postal Service recommends that long guns be sent by registered mail and that no marking of any kind which would indicate the nature of the contents be placed on the outside of any parcel containing firearms. Handguns are not mailable. A common or contract carrier must be used to ship a handgun.

(F14) Who may ship handguns through the U.S. Postal Service? [Back]

Federal firearm licensees may send an unloaded handgun in the mail to another FFL in customary trade shipments. Handguns also may be mailed to any officer, employee, agent, or watchman who is eligible under 18 U.S.C. 1715 to receive pistols, revolvers, and other firearms capable of being concealed on the person for use in connection with his or her official duties.

However, postal service regulations must be followed. Any person proposing to mail a handgun must file with the postmaster, at the time of mailing, an affidavit signed by the addressee stating that the addressee is qualified to receive the firearm, and the affidavit must bear a certificate stating that the firearm is for the official use of the addressee. See the current Postal Manual for details.

The Postal Service recommends that all firearms be sent by registered mail and that no marking of any kind which would indicate the nature of the contents be placed on the outside of any parcel containing firearms. (See also Questions B7 and B8.)

shipping USPA is fine, as long as you are not shipping a handgun.

It is best if you take it down first, (your lower is already taken down),

DO NOT write anything about firearm on the box, insure, delivery confirm.

It will cost less than 8 bucks, and take 3 days.
