This is unbelievable.

The demands of two regional wars and other global requirements are stretching the military’s chief terrorist-hunting unit thin.

Much has been said about the Army and Marine Corps being pressed to their breaking points by having to rotate troops in and out of Afghanistan and Iraq for the past four years. President Bush has authorized them both to sign up more recruits to meet future deployments.

But there is another unit under pressure: Joint Special Operations Command, an elite force of Army Delta Force and Navy SEALs who hunt high-value terrorist targets.

The JSOC’s core element at Fort Bragg, N.C., consists of [edited] , counting a specialized intelligence unit that the Pentagon folded into the command last year.

With a limited number of premier special operators, it has to maintain a constant presence in Iraq and Afghanistan, and be ready to handle major emergencies, such as a crisis in a nuclear-armed country.

A military officer assigned to the U.S. special operations community said Afghanistan pays the price. The JSOC once maintained robust presents of more than [edited] “shooters,” plus large contingent of Army Rangers. Rangers are the JSOC’s so-called “Tier 2” element periodically assigned to the group. Today, the officer said, there are typically just [edited]assigned to the JSOC in Afghanistan.

There are two main reasons for the reduced numbers.

First, many of the top targets in the Afghanistan theater, such as Osama bin Laden and his No. 2, Ayman Zawahiri, are across the border in Pakistan’s tribal regions. The JSOC can’t operate there routinely. The CIA and its paramilitary force do most of the terrorist-hunting there.

“The JSOC footprint in Afghanistan is [edited],” the military officer said. “[edited]to Iraq.”

The war in Iraq is putting the most strains on JSOC forces. The country has a long list of high-value targets to chase down who belong to al-Qaida in Iraq and various Iraqi insurgent groups. The JSOC’s most famous kill came last June when it located al-Qaida’s leader in Iraq, Abu Musab Zarqawi, near Baquba. An Air Force F-16 strike killed him.

The JSOC’s Iraq contingent includes [edited], augmented by [edited], according to the military officer, who asked to remain anonymous in this story. Plus, the counterterrorism unit’s Iraq headquarters has more than [edited]from a secret spy organization known as Task Force [edited].

Spokesmen for U.S. Special Operations Command, which oversees the JSOC, do not discuss the unit’s numbers or budgets.

Navy SEALs are pissed off, namely, my friend I got this from. YMMV.

I'm quite certain that wherever this was published unedited, our enemies have the resources to find it without trolling arfcom for posts on the topic.

Just putting the first sentence into Google and clicking "I'm feeling lucky" gave me the article.

I'm all for opsec, but "that ain't this" as they say.

gotta agree with that. I was like WTF you are editing the story for arfcom because we are terrorists? Well gee, I feel the same way about you...

If you're serious about this, then you might want to remove the email addy of the guy who wrote the article thats on the bottom in yellow.

A quick google search brought up the article in its entirety with no edits.

Jeezuz h christ. I know it's out there, I know you can find it with a quick search, I know blah blah blah.

Would you like me to make it even easier and become part of the fucking problem?

Has anyone besides me emailed this guy and told hime what a POS he is? Has anyone emailed his employer?

Shit. The reason I posted this is: operators are pissed off about it and I thought you might just be willing to write this guy and his employer and tell them what YOU THINK ABOUT IT!

The reason I edited it was because this is the largest firearms board on the net and I don't think making it easier to find is a good idea even though it is available elswhere.

Would that specialized intelligence unit be the ISA?

ETA:  I read the original - he did give some pretty specific numbers, and I don't think that's a good idea.

What in the hell are we supposed to say?  How dare you allow your writer to publish numbers given out on the .gov/.mil's own websites, during their press releases, and on c-span?

How dare you say JSOC is getting stretched a bit thin and run a bit ragged?

Come on man.

Rowan writes some interesting articles.  I too feel in some cases he goes over the line in what he writes, but he does nowhere near the damage that the New York Times does like when it released the story about our monitoring of overseas banking, etc.

If your going to be pissed off, be pissed off at the 'military officer' who opened his mouth.

I really don't know much about what is secret and what is not, but I'd guess that much or most of the edited stuff can be picked up from the regular news agencies or unclassified military documents.

If the numbers and such are classified, then the guy who spilled the beans should be brought up on charges.  Is that happening?

Fine, you go and tell your "SEAL friends" just how you were able to be all indignant when us arfcommers pointed out your lame attempts at OPSEC on an openly avalible article and then also had the gall to point out that the true fault lies with morons in the govt. or military who were dumbass enough to tell a reporter these numbers to begin with.

When a reporter gets info, they print it. They are not beholden to anybody to follow certian rules of information to disseminate or not. The idiot with the security clearance who gave out the numbers needs an ass kicking, not the reporter who probably figures that all the info they get from the mil/govt. is all intentionally skewed to begin with so he has no problem printing it simply because he expects it to already have been approved for release.

I'm not going to write a letter to a frikken newspaper reporter when the problem that needs to be addressed lies within your very own "SEAL friends" chain of command.

sheesh.

The numbers are wrong anyways, so I don't know what the big deal is.

1) I only have one nut and its my left one, no way Im giving it up just to be a BLANK (anything).

2) Every scammer in North America uses the word Navy Seals. If you want me to not pay attention, just utter those two words, stamp them on your product, etc..

3) Everytime I think of the Navy in general, I think of KA3B and/or the Village People.
