How much longer can Britan allow the detention of their Marines go on? What options does Britan have to get this situation resolved? Will they allow their Marines to be held captive indefinately while they fight a political fight, or will they go in and get 'em?

The Iranian president held our hostages for 444 days the last time he was involved in this sort of thing...

The British military doesn't have the mass it once did (they have good troops, but the numbers have been victimized for the sake of social benefit/welfare programs).  However, they are not alone.

The Brits have been by our side in the tough times since 9/11.  We owe them.

My wager says that we will put pressure on Iran that will be hard to ignore until the Royal Marines & sailors are released.

It'll be over a year before they are home.

Can Iran withstand a naval blockade and embargo for one year?
Cuz it's coming.

I never thought I'd say this to the squids, but - GO NAVY !!!

Unfortunately, blockades and embargos really don't work. The higher-ups still get everything they want, and due to propaganda the public just begins to dislike the blockading country.

I expect to see these chips come to the table at the UN.

As previously noted, you can't pay your bills (especially your nuclear reactor bills) if you can't ship oil.

I for one want to see some daring rescue raid, but I don't think they have the political guts to carry out one.

Yeah I would love to see that too but, I think they may be expecting a raid, and they would kill the Marines in that event anyway.

My hunch is diplomacy will be given a long time to work while economic preassure is applied wherever possible. The people of Great Britton and the U.S. do not have the will for another conflict right now.

this brings to my mind which leaders had the guts to pull the most outstanding rescues:

Gran Sasso -- Hitler

Entebbe -- Yitzhak Rabin

Operation Nimrod -- Thatcher

Son Tay  -- Nixon

All of 'em had guts and lots of it.

If that was going to happen, the Brits would already have done this. The problem now is that the kidnapped British troops are probably spread out all over iran.

We do owe the British and it's their call. If they want to march into iran, we better damn well be right at their sides.
