| Ok the story is I fell down a flight of stairs over the weekend and cut my knee up very badly. Long sotry short I have a huge amount of stitches below the right knee. The doc gave me a script for Percocet for the pain. This is the first time I have ever taken it. My question is why is it a perscription medicine? All it is doing for me is numbing the pain. I'm not getting all messed up on it. Am I missing something? |
That's why he gave them to you... |
I know that. My question was if it just numbs pain why is it perscription only? |
It's a narcotic listed under the Controlled Substances Act. What is Percocet? • Oxycodone (related to codeine) is in a class of drugs called narcotic analgesics. It relieves pain. • Acetaminophen is a less potent pain reliever that increases the effects of oxycodone. • Together, acetaminophen and oxycodone are used to relieve moderate-to-severe pain. |
I suspect its prescription only because people try the triple dose plus vodka option. |
Because Percocet is a combination of acetaminophen (OTC Tylenol) and oxycodone, a derivative of the narcotic codeine, a controlled substance, which is why it needs a prescription. They combine them because together, each boosts the action of the other. As pain relievers go, it's mildly effective, but doesn't have a huge narcotic effect. |

It's a narcotic. And it's highly addictive. I actually went through terrible withdrawl following 10 days of Percs (1 every 3 hours) following a GSW, I threw up all over myself and ended up hallucinating to the point where it frightened me the last time I took one. ETA: Keep in mind I was bedridden and wasn't really eating much for those 10 days too, probably compounded the effects. |

it effects different people in different ways... according to wikipedia, codiene has no effect on something like 15% of white males. i was on darvocet for a little while, and it got me nice and high. i don't think it's as strong as percocet either. i would take it with caffiene as that seemed to make me feel even better. |

I had a very painful surgery while in the Army and the doc had me on morphine for a few days....Ahhhh that stuff took the pain right away. It was like a warm blanket was pulled over me every time they hit me with it. For someone who has never used drugs the experience was interesting. After that first few days he gave me percocet. Maybe it was because I was used to the morphine, but the percs did jack shit for me. I felt nothing and IIRC I was on a pretty hefty dose. I just stopped taking them once I got out of the hospital I saw no point in it. |
| When I had my amputation, the doc gave me vicodin. I was taking 5 YES FIVE 5/500's every 3-4 hours and 10mg of valium at the same time. I was nice and roasty toasty and yet I still hurt like hell. Then they tried giving me percocets. I got less pain relief and I had some seriosly fucked up dreams and refused to take them because of that. |

Be really careful, they can get you before you know it. Even if you are taking what the Dr prescribes. Don't think because you have a prescription, that you are safe from addiction. You can get addicted to 2 a day as easy as 10 a day, and the withdrawals are about the same. I've had a really close to home experience to confirm this. Be Very Careful! |

Spongy...Are you a caucasian of probable Nordic origin? If so, congratulations!! You are the proud owner of a liver that is deficient of a certain enzyme (a cytochrome P450 subtype) that metabolizes synthetic opiates. This allows you to get the painkilling effect without getting otherwise all messed up. A bit-o-euphoria and pain relief is all you are gonna get from Percocet, and really that's kinda cool. Enjoy!! |

I used to take percocet when my son stepped on my left nut...I couldn't barely carry myself...when I took it ...I could do almost anything normal....call me hard-headed, cause my doctor told me if I can't keep still and get rest, he would have to operate on my left nut |
That's bad stuff. Although 2000 mg. Acetaminophen daily is said to be safe, my doc won't allow his patients to take more than 1500 mg. AND no booze AT ALL. |
Its an opiate based pain killer opiate=opium=heroin. All made from the same plant. If you take it with no pain at all it seems to cause greater euphoria then if you take it when you are in pain. |
Some of y'all have poor understanding of the physical principles that govern. |
