I got a used Toughbook CF-28, 600mhz PIII, 256k, 20gig hd. It came with Windows 2000 and I'm trying to install XP Pro, but the install keeps hanging up at "Preparing to Install"/"Installing Devices".

Am I doing something wrong here?

Thanks!

Are you sure its "hanging up" thats a slow processor. How long does it hang?

It's a P3 with limited memory. It might not be hanging, it might just be taking a while. Make sure you don't have any extra crap plugged in anywhere and all your hardware is good and known to be working. XP has pretty decent support for most hardware straight out of the box, but there's always a chance your particular machine might not like XP.

with on 256k of memory it may take 10 years to load.

cool system (toughbook).  are you using an XP disc with Service pack 2 already in it?

It got stuck at "Remaining Time: 35 Minutes" for well over 35 minutes with no change whatsoever.

Thanks for the reply!

Yes, gotta love those enterprise copies!

Still hangs up when "Installing Devices", any other suggestions?

Bumped for the graveyard shift.

It is still hanging up midway through the installation at "Installing Devices - Setup Will Complete in 35 Minutes" and just stays that way.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks

did you format the system or simply have it upgrade?

I'd wait an hour or more (leave it for a few hours). On a fast system it will take 20-40 minutes from that point.

I'd recommend that you do a fresh install after formating the drive. Definitely DO NOT do an upgrade from Win2000.

I helped a friend install WinXP Pro on a Pentium 333MHz w/ 128MB of memory. It took over 2 hours to install.

I would just "find" a copy of Win2K SP4 and load that instead of XP.  I think you will find it to be MUCH more responsive and will run 98% of the software you need.  YMMV
