 ZURICH, Switzerland  —

What began as a routine training exercise almost ended in an embarrassing diplomatic incident after a company of Swiss soldiers got lost at night and marched into neighboring Liechtenstein.

According to Swiss daily Blick, the 170 infantry soldiers from the neutral country wandered more than a mile across an unmarked border into the tiny principality early Thursday before realizing their mistake and turning back.

A spokesman for the Swiss army confirmed the story, but said that there were unlikely to be any serious repercussions for the mistaken invasion.

"We've spoken to the authorities in Liechtenstein and it's not a problem," Daniel Reist told The Associated Press on Friday.

Officials in Liechtenstein also played down the incident.

Interior Ministry spokesman Markus Amman said nobody in Liechtenstein had even noticed the soldiers, who were carrying assault rifles but no ammunition. "It's not like they stormed over here with attack helicopters or something," he said.

Liechtenstein, which has about 34,000 inhabitants and is slightly smaller than Washington, D.C., does not have an army.

Two most dangerous things: a PFC with a clip board, and a 2ndLt with a compass

Funny how a story like this makes headlines while we are under invasion 24/7 and no one of significance seems to care...

You know the funny thing is:  I bet if the Swiss didn't own up to it, no one would have known...much less give a shit.

What's even stupider is that fact that this made news.  Liechtenstein has an agreement with Switzerland for the defense of it's country by
the Swiss.   So what if Swiss troops were in Liechtenstein?

Switzerland also borders France (on the west).  Liechtenstein is on the east.  Thankfully these Swiss soldiers didn't go west instead or Switzerland might have accidently conquered France!

Yeah, all it would take is one lost Swiss guard, and the french would beg the Swiss to allow them to unconditionally surrender...

Maybe, until the Austrains smoked the invading porcine contingent with a squad of infantry.

Or in the case presented aabove: a corporal and two privates.

Once while duck hunting in North Dakota, I made an accidental armed invasion of Canada.

This is how Hitler trained his troops also.

he walked them across the borders "accidentally" to practice DOMINATING NEUTRAL ASS.

All hail our Swiss overlords!

They would rather that you not have automatic weapons, but that you can get a handwritten permit from the police for anything short of a tactical nuke.  You can get a CHL as a foreigner with some prodding (a few Austrians and Swiss have them who work there) if you already have one.  Again, they just want to know who you are and what you are up to.

The application process is , essentially, you talk to the police and they ask all of your friends questions like "Is he a pervert".  They like to talk to your local police department about whether or not you are a known problem.  And then they write you a note.  I assume that they document it somewhere.

I really don't know if there are any formal rules beyond "foreigners can't have guns" and "no automatic weapons", but, again, you get a note from the police and you can do anything you want.

It's very much like living in a small town in Texas full of Hill Country Germans who spend 90% of their time sticking their nose into other people's business and (at the same time) being shocked and appalled that anyone is getting into their business.
