I had a conversation with a guy in one of my classes today and he said that people who immigrate to the US (and don't  already speak the language) shouldn't have to speak english at all.

Here's what I told him, "Well, here's what I think. If you're 'visiting' my country, i wouldn't expect you to master our language but you should know at least a little bit of it. If you're going to 'LIVE' in my country on a permanent basis, then I would expect you to know the language. I've seen some people in this country get pissed off whe others don't understand them. If you don't speak our language, how can we help you?"

I told him that i'm not racist or anything, but if i was to travel to a foreign country, i would do my best to understand a little bit of the language prior to travelling there. If I was gonna MOVE there, i would learn their language as best I could. That should be the same thing for people coming to live here in the US.

He kinda looked at me at me for a second, puzzled, and then changed the topic.

What do you guys think?

It's pretty sad that people have to qualify just about everything they ever say with that gem.

Was this guy a native English-speaker?

He was hispanic. Apparently, he was "forced" to learn English when he and his family moved to the US years ago.

Spot on!

My maternal grandparents spoke Chinese and Korean.  They refused to teach my Mother and her brothers/sisters.  They also would not teach me or any other grandchildren either language.

When questioned why; their answer was that you spoke English in the United States.  They admit it was hard learning English and assimilating but they also admit that lazy people don't succeed.

If he doesn't want to speak English, inform him that there are several countires where the native language is Spanish.  He can move to any of them and feel right at home.

Then watch the hemming and hawing start.

Exactly.  He needs to read what the DWGs had to say about language and unity.

Ask why an American who goes to another country and doesn't speak the local language is considered an "Ugly American", but someone who moves here illegally and doesn't speak English is supposed to be "an asset to our diversity".

God bless America!

the idea of a "melting pot" is dead.

All the illegals (and some of the legal) immigrants want is to suck off the tit of the country.  It's all about the Benjamins.  Forget all that old fashioned bullshit like "patriotism" and "becoming American".  Fuck that shit!  We want all the good shit but we're not going to give up a damn thing for it and if you try and make us, we'll sue and scream "racist!"

One more generation on this path and it's all over.  Two more and we're going to look like the Balkans.

Good point.
