| I opened up my old DVR that puked a few months ago and looked to see whats its made of It has a Maxtor 160GB model 6l16OPO, can I format it and put it in my pc? |
![]() I bought my RCA80 at Best Buy, got it to replace my Sony SAT-60 (which I purchased at Fry's) to replace an even older non-Tivo RCA unit. No where for any of my three units did I sign for or agree to anything remotely resembling a lease agreement. I signed my credit card receipt, brought them home, plugged them in and called Directv to activate them. I gave them my serial and smart card numbers, they turned them on. There's a $4.95 charge for the Tivo guide service in addition to the normal channel subscription fee. I'd really like to see Directv come up with a way of showing that I agreed to a lease of any of those units (including the first 2 which were shitcanned years ago). *unless this is some new bullshit, in which case when my RCA80 dies Directv will be losing a 10+ year customer. |
to lazy to check.. here's what i think... the non HD-dvds you can buy.. i dont think you can buy a HD-dvd.. if yours is a standard tivo, you can own it and take it apart. assuming thats how you got it (bought it). |
When they told me they didnt want it back i could give it to the installer (sent to replace it) or dispose of it it became mine lease or not. |

I think the reason they claim it's still theirs and on lease, but don't bother to reclaim most of the units when you're done with them, is so they can have a stronger legal position in the event that someone gets caught hacking one of their set top boxes. Allows them to have more ammo to use against you. Realistically, if you're not doing anything illegal with their boxes, they'll probably never ask for its return. CJ |
