I can see my old profile! It is in BACKUP status as of 2-16-07.

How do I make it work again?

Same *exact* thing happened to me this week.  No Gaim, no Firefox, no Tunderbird, no quicklaunch icons, no desktop icons.

I ended up just blowing the whole thing away and reinstalling since I had all my important data on another drive. . .

Hope you figure out a slick way to get everything back!

Use system restore to set the computer back to a date BEFORE the updates were installed.

Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Restore.

Check the "Restore My Computer To An Earlier Time" option, then click the "Next" button.

On the following screen, is a calendar. On days where a restore point was created, you will see the date in bold text.

Choose a date previous to the updates, and click it.  (if you KNOW when they were installed, of course)

It'll show the restore points in a list on the right side windowpane.  There may be more than one point per day, incidentally. No big deal.  Just use the one closest to just before you ran the updates.

Click the one on the list, and then click the "Next" button again...  It'll warn you about settings being changed and your computer being rebooted automatically in the next two screens. Just click "Next" again and let it do it's thing.

This should get you back to your configuration before the updates were installed and HOPEFULLY, it'll be ok again.

If not, you'll need to find out which updates WERE installed, and UNinstall them, if it lets you.

Optionally, you can use your Windows Install CD, to do a "Repair Install" and bring the machine back to the state it was in when you first installed Windows.  After that, you'll need to REinstall all windows updates again naturally, up to the current ones.

I never allow my computers to install updates automatically because of precisely this.

MANY times MS releases buggy crap.  This is NOT new.  Waiting a few weeks to update gives them time to fix it if it IS screwy and YOU don't suffer for it.

Hope that helps some...

1) make sure you've hidden system files and protected operating system files in folder options
2) copy "desktop" "favorites" and "my documents" into the new profile.

(you might also need to grab a PST but probably not)

If you want to get every last shred of your old profile follow out-a-ammo's post and then search microsoft's support site for "outlook express" + "identities" ... I believe that there's some registry keys that have to be imported as well.

Never messed with OE much... sorry.

You can import that in OE. File, Import, Messages, OE6,  Import mail from OE6 store directory, browse to the folder with the DBX files.

Like CZ75 said, just open OE, then in the "File" menu, go to "Import" and then import mail and settings....

Just browse to your old mail store folder with the .dbx files in it, and OE will import and reapply all your emails and account settings.

The default OE store should be:

C:\Documents and Settings\*Your Logon Name*\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{*Some Big Ass Number/Letter String*}\Microsoft\Outlook Express

That'll be where your .dbx files are located and where you *go* when you import, in OE.

If you had any mail rules and you don't know how to work in the registry, it's easier to just recreate them from scratch.  You DON'T want to screw up your registry.

ETA:  You'll also need to import your address book.  It's done the same way as mail and accounts.

The default location it's stored in is:

C:\Documents and Settings\*Your Logon Name*\Application Data\Microsoft\Address Book

It's a .wab file.  That's the one you'll import.

Also, I live in central PHX... If you're not too far and really get stuck with something, I can give you a hand.

Give a hollar...

I must be lucky-or stupid.  I assume you're talking about the godaweful 18 item update that hit around Thursday.

I updated 2 personally owned laptops, 1 government laptop, and 8 government desktops.  Had ZERO problems.  I only had admin priviledges on my personal laptops, and 2 of the .gov desktops, so that's not an isse here.
