So i was warming up my car tonight and i was revving it a little in park, and noticed that it kind of spuddered and shook when i accidently pressed the gas to about 4k rpms. I then drove home fine, however i only drove about 20-35 mph because it is snowing like a SOB outside. Im worried that there is a problem with my transmisition. When i parked I was worried about what had happened and wanted to see if it would still happen so i did it again and the same thing happened. it seems like a kind of slow spuddering that wants to die....if you know what im saying, and kind of rocks the car at the came time.
ANY INFO WOULD BE GREATLY WELCOMED!!!! Thank you.
ETA- this is an automatic with about 60k miles on it. its a dodge intrepid 2003

Rev limiter most likely.  Had a 97 Taurus SHO that would do the same thing if you rev'd it up like that in park.

If the car was in park then it wasnt the transmission...

Does your car have an engine rev limiter?

dirty fuel filter??

I have a 2001 Nissan Pathfinder and had a similar problem around the same mileage..I took it to the shop and they changed the O2 (oxygen) sensor and the intake valve sensor....It just might be that...

Search google for threads on your vehicle...I checked mine and it was a common problem with my model..hope that helps

so its susposed to do that???? I hope so because earlier today before the snow came in i made a trip to my local sheriffs office for a permit to purchise......kind of a long trip. probably 15min on the highway one way and 15min back with out a single problem.

ETA- i searched yahoo and google but its hard to diagnos these things im not a mechanic at all.

OK i just googled for a dodge intrepid rev engine limiter, and it appears that dodge among other kinds of cars DO in fact have one that is set at around 4k rpms on an automatic sometimes lower 3.5krpms. and that is about the standard setting. I think that this is probably the cause, because this is a fairly new car and has been very well kept. However im still used to my 1991 camaro RS which i ran real hard and revd up all the time.

When you "floor it" in park/neutral: rev limiter. It is what saves your engine from blowing apart if some idiot fell asleap with foot on trottle.

Is it running rough at idle also now? Could be a bad spark plug?

With these newer cars what is really cool is that the engine light will come on is it is missing or anything, then just find an auto parts store that reads codes for free and they tell you exactly what it is. DO NOT GO TO A DEALER!!! They will charge like $250 to do the same thing, then lie and say it needs a $3500 tranny. It happened to me.

My Dodge truck will start idleing rough, then the next day the engine lite comes on, I go to the auto parts store, they tell me "it's missing on cylinder #5. Then I buy Cap, rotor, wires and plugs and replace them, then they turn off the engine lite. Happens every 36,000 miles on my truck.

LMFAO so what do you do when for instance they pull a code for the IAC and you replace it and it don't fix it? What do you do when a Ford pulls P0172 and P0174 and says you need both bank O2 sensors and it don't fix it? Hell I could go on all night people like you make my laugh my ass off! What are you going to do when you get your free codes pulled then replace all the wires and plugs and it don't fix it?

Be sure to brag about that on the net also.

you guys are blowing this out of proportion. It was a  cold engine revving in park. The 3.5 isnt that smooth to start with and returning to idle from 4k isnt nice for the engine. Theres no problem unless you start to stall out in park and have to rev to keep it going
