I've got some ACE Rewards bucks, some cash, and some incomplete gun projects requiring a Dremel. Which Dremel models do you prefer and why? What are the must-have accessories? Thanks! |
Uh Gun and Dremel do not go together! And should never be used in the same sentence! That is what files and stones are for! You CANNOT GLUE MORE METAL ON AN ITEM! But don't listen to me.. Get your dremel, and then visit a smith when to take too much off! |
My old transfer guy and gunsmith used a dremel to do M4 feedramp cuts on my lower receiver. ![]() I had an M4 upper and the shelf that was created by the lower was causing ammo to misfeed when manually cycling it. I am going to give my Dremel a work out this weekend. I gotta cut out some holes in the bottom of my computer to accomodate 3 120mm fans for my new water cooling radiator, drill out some rivets for a power supply cage, and cut a new 120mm fan hole in the top of it for better ventilation. Then I'm gonna sand and paint it all! Should be a busy Saturday! |
Usually I tell them yup its F**ked, you need to order a new trigger/hammer/what ever they set out to cut upon.. And its $25 just to tell them that.. But I do have to say I do have a fordom tool here in the shop. But I have steady hands and know exactally where to cut. and i have extra parts in a box so when i screw up im covered. |
What kind of stones, and where do you get them? Can you get them fine enough to do polishing work? |
Yes.. Look here... www.brownells.com Your looking for fine and very fine ceramic stones. |
Ok, so I've narrowed it down to these: 300 Series Variable-Speed Tool Kit, $59.99 - Looks like a good kit for just getting started, updated design for the Dremel. 3956-02 Variable-Speed Rotary Tool Tool Kit with Flex-Shaft, $89.99 - Kinda the one I'm leaning towards with the flex shaft, accessories, etc. 400-2/51 400 Series XPR Rotary Tool Kit, $89.99 - Not leaning this way only because I don't need a lawn mower/gardening tool sharpener or circle cutter, nor does it come with the flex shaft, but it's the same price as the 3956. Any last thoughts? |

You should pick up a soldering iron as well if you don't already have one. It is the perfect complement to a dremel when you're trying to destroy your gun collection with minimal effort. Seriously, if you don't have a dremel yet, you need to get one. I've used mine for more projects than I can count. Just be careful, its easy to get carried away. |

I used my Dremel to: 1. Fit the BarSto barrel to my P226. 2. Chop my A3 carry handle (back in 1998, before it was cool). 3. Polish the feed ramp on my POS Springfield 1911. and much, much more. I have a 13 year-old corded model, but I wouldn't mind the newer 7.2v or 9.6v cordless models for lighter jobs. I use the standard and fiberglass cut off wheels. Indispensible! I have the flex-shaft for tight jobs, the mower blade grinder (works great), the drywall router and even the little circular saw attachment. It's all good. |
Get some high TPI jig saw blades! I used to use my dremel for 120mm holes and if your cutting steel it takes ages. Aluminum goes a bit quicker but still cant touch the jig saw. Also are you going to be using plain circle or one of the cool 120mm fan templates that improve air flow? BTW get the corded variable as it looks like you are leaning for, the flex shaft is nice but not necessary IMO. |
Here it is. I picked it up about an hour after posting. $27 out the door ![]() 3956-02 Variable-Speed Rotary Tool Tool Kit with Flex-Shaft, $89.99 ![]() |
