my comp must have caught the HIV or some sort of Viral infection.

when the screen saver is on, which is all black with blue words scrolling across it, in random parts of the screen there are small blue dots / slashes that shouldnt be there.

i have Comcast high speed cable... and only use internet explorer to surf the net.

if i have 2-3 windows of internet explorer up and im going back and forth through them, posting on here, whatever, lets say i scroll down on my photobucket account, ALL the pics in there multiply X10 in but only half the pic shows... 10 times.  at the bottom of the screen, those pics are stuck there now, and when i scroll the pointer over them most of them dissapear and the tool bar shows up again, mostly. if i let it sit for a while, it goes back to normal, but gets fucked up again later on... the monitor has been going bad for a while now, but i think this is a tower problem

the problem started today, i did system restore earlier and it started doing it again. im going to try my comcast "desktop doctor" right now...

any other ideas? shoot the monitor cause its going bad, call geeksqaud or find a way to fix it myself?

Start - Run - type "msconfig" - click start up - shut down all non-essential programs at start up (ie most of what you see there...)  Google stuff if you cant seem to determine if its important or not.

Looks like video card issues.  If you hit Ctrl, Alt, Del then click on performance, what is your CPU usage?  Also tab to Processes and see what is using the most sys resources.

looks like your video card drivers are either not installed or corrupt

go to device manager and tell me what is under DISPLAY ADAPTERS

right click my computer
click properties
click hardware tab
click device manager
click display adapters
double click adapter
click driver tab

you may also have a fan failing on the video card. an overtemp video engine will do similar things if everything else looks good.

Right click My Computer, goto Properties,
then the Hardware Tab, click the Device manager Button.

Does it do this with any other programs?
Windows Explorer, Word, etc. ?

What OS are you running?
If it's XP, 256MB RAM is reeaaallllyyy stretching things. I wouldn't ever try to run XP with anything under 512, preferably 1 GB.

RAM is cheap - go buy some more.

i have LIMEWIRE on the computer with a ton of songs, but i try to delete the ones i dont use and a couple weeks ago switched most of it to D drive cause C drive was overfilled...   but i havent added anything recently...  the problem hasnt showed in 2 hours.  so i have limewire and ITUNES and both have pretty much the same songs on them, do they BOTH use up all that space or is it only stored once on the computer?

what can i do about yahoo toolbar without giving up yahoo messenger?

Limewire and iTunes both just store info in the HD.  I shut limewire down when I am not actively DLing anything because the default is to sit in the Sys tray open and using memory.

I started having those exact problems and it was video card issues.  Is your computer enclosed in a desk or is it just sitting out on the floor?  If its out on the floor try taking the side panel off and setting a small fan next to it to cool everything off good.

Either way you might wanna try getting a can of air duster and cleaning the tower out...that will do you alot of good.

ive been wondering if this is the issue.  the computer is enclosed in a desk but the back of the tower sticks out... and for some strange reason the dog likes to lay by there, and in turn if he sheds it collects there... dog fur in the machine?

ETA, well, its been cleaned for the first time in over a year. the first startup was weird, but we'll see what happens. no dog fur in there, but plenty of dust.

a huge THANK YOU for all the advice!

Oh dear god...
Make sure you post pics when you crack that sucker open. $5 sez it's full of dust and dog fur.
Cleaning that out will probably take care of any contribution video card overheating has.
