My desktop at home will not start up. It comes up to th boot menu and starts making a clicking sound. It will not let me into the boot menu, but it just stays on that screen and keeps clicking from the cpu. Any ideas on what it could be? Thanks alot for any help.

sounds like the hard drive is almost dead.

if you didn't back up your data, you probably won't ever get it.

EDIT:

It could be a wire caught in a fan, just open the case and take look.

Beyond almost dead is my guess.

The clicking sound is likely the read head bouncing from side to side aimlessly.

I currently have 2 hard drives in the computer. one is 40 gig and has my windows on it, and the other is 80 gig and it has all of my important files, games, pictures, music, ect. Can I just put a new hard drive in to replace the one with windows, or how do I go about fixing this problem. Thanks

yes, if you have a windows CD.

hopefully your Master drive (the one you boot off of) is the one that went bad.

eta:  most new drives are SATA and may not work on older computers that don't have a SATA port (well, not without a PCI adapter card).

With power off...

Unplug your keyboard and try to boot.

You may have a shorted keyboard or just a stuck key...

If not you need to boot to a OS cd (if W2K or XP ) and get to the recovery consol.

Then run CHKDSK /F

Good luck

Ok, I unplugged the keyboard and tried and that was not it. Can someone elaborate on the rest of this process, I am lost. Thanks

You have to go into the BIOS and set it to boot from CD first.

Do I just need to replace my hard drive? Is there any way to save what is on the old hard drive?

Yep, sounds like the disk drive's click of death. Shut the PC off and turn it upside-down and start it up again. I had a disk drive do that and I flipped it over and it was able to start and run to be able to copy files off of it. It's a long shot but maybe it'll work for you.

You could replace the hdd and use a USB enclosure to attempt to recover data.

But - If your PC won't even make it to a BIOS screen then maybe you have powersupply issues.
