This is going to be another Rant. This time, it’s about the “Welfare System” in my state of Nevada. I was at work a few days ago and was asked to go to the return desk to help with a return. So I found myself in this situation with a male customer in his 30s and perfectly healthy looking that had a few high dollar items that he wanted to return. He had just bought them 8 minutes prior to going to the courtesy desk. He told me that they really where not the items he wanted and he wants his CASH back! Now normally I would not have a problem with that. He had a receipt and all the items matched up. But in this case, I was shocked because I was unaware of how the “EBT system” worked. This guy bought the items with his EBT card then went and got in the line at the return desk to get a full CASH refund for the items he bought with his welfare money. This is a bunch of crap how this system is set up. If you are unaware of how the EBT card is set up, basically, it’s a state issued Debit Card and on the 1st or 15th of the month the state deposits “OUR” money into “THEIR” accounts. With a return situation like this with a Debit Card you can not credit the card (it’s a debt card witch is the same as cash). I am so tired of all the scams and the dead beats out there. I work my ass off and I see people like this! He knew the whole system and how to work it and when I was looking into this matter he is yelling at me to give him “his” money. Um… am I wrong here but is it not “our” money and its going where?
Now don’t get me wrong here some folks need the help but it should be limited sources of help to get people back on their feet or help seniors get by. There are way too many people working the system and “we” are all paying for it. For example, I know this guy that was going to quit his second job because Welfare was going to cut back his food stamps etc. what is the logic here UGGGG. The other big one that pisses me off is these people with the free / limited state Health care. I don’t understand this B.S. at all. I have to pay for my wife and kids’ health care and have to pay deductibles and for meds and all that real world stuff that we do as adults. So how is it that if you don’t have a descent job or no job or you’re the only source of income in your house and your spouse does not work you get free health care or state assisted health care for your whole family be it emergency or cosmetic. I know people who make good money and there jobs don’t offer health care. They don’t get the same treatment if they get sick. It’s hard on them as well just because you chose to live in a certain tax bracket you should not be rewarded free health care or welfare. These people need to suck it up like the rest of the adult world and start PAYING their way. Once they get on the Welfare system they don’t want to get off and “WE” keep paying for them.

What sort of high dollar items was he returning?  I'm assuming you're talking about a grocery store?

Turn his sorry ass in to social services. I would be willing to bet you a nickel they would put a stop to his thieving ways.

Turn him in.  We turned in a cousin because he was collecting unemployment, even though he had another job that he was getting paid in cash.  I assume since he won't speak to anyone in the family anymore, he got busted .

I'd bet you a nickel that they would not put a stop to his thieving ways.

I would bet you another nickel that social services doesn't give one flying f@#k.

I would bet you one more nickel that it would actually cost us less money to just give them cash up-front, and avoid the cost of the cards/associated fees.

When I worked at a grocery store in my younger years we had many welfare families send their kids in with $1 food stamps to buy one piece of 3 cent bubble gum one at a time...  In a few minutes, one of the welfare parents would come in with a pocket full of change, go grab a 12-pack of beer, and head to the register.

Oh, and then there was the old welfare lady who, when I asked her to carry her gallon of milk out since my hands were full of her other groceries, said "Why?  Are you to lazy to do it?"...  In retrospect I should have just accidentally dropped them on her...

I have already exceeded my “rant limit” or I would post my feelings about this.

So I’ll post this instead

What kind of stuff was he returning?

An easy way to fix that would be to make those cards for food items only, and no alcohol or tobacco products.

This sentence contains your most significant error.  Just because some people NEED help doesn't give them a claim on your efforts.

Especially when that claim is fulfilled by having the entity (Government) that is supposed to defend your rights designated as the violator of those rights (Tax and welfare distribute).

The only way to "fix" welfare is to turn it off and go back to a 100% voluntary system -- private donations to private entities for distribution to whomever those entitities decide to help.

If people WANT to help others who are in need of assistance, I won't stand in their way but they need to stop thinking of MY wallet as the means to fulfill their philanthropic wishes.

Well, if you really want to get pissed off, just pop over to your friendly welfare housing and look at the thermostat. Usually set at 80F cause YOU are paying for it. However, they do like their fresh air so there is usually a window or door cracked somewhere.

These are not the elderly or disabled, these are poppin fresh kidlets gals and their boylets.

See if you can get your company policy written as;

"All refunds will be issued as store credits."

Unfortunately, changing a failed system does not seem to be an option, just easier to cut the check.

Try standing in line behind a well dressed seniorita, with a heaping cart of food, who then pays with an EBT card. Then goes out to her brand new 2007 Excursion with custom wheels & tires.

Yeah, cause we all know those benjamins just go into a huge safe and the rich bastards just wallow around in the bills naked while they light their cigars with a $1000 bill in one hand and stick a dildo in the ass of the working man with the other.

I fully agree with you I just don’t thank that day will ever come. You know the whole food stamp program started out as a good idea to help the farmers get by when they had a bad season do to drought, flooding , ect. I don’t know when it became a free for all for every dirt bag lazy S.O.B.

Only on Saturday mornings.  The markets are closed.  Sometimes I skip the dildo action if I am feeling charitable.

Makes me ill.  POS scum.

You know, they won't investigate most of the fraud cases because they say they're understaffed.... But if they'd hire more investigators, they'd save millions by cutting off the perpetrators.  MORE than enough to pay for the employees AND it's creating jobs.

BTW- turn him in.  Document it all in detail and see what happens.  Probably nothing, but wouldn't it be a nice surprise if something did come of it?

It depends.  Some people qualify for cash assistance.  It's supposed to help buy stuff like toilet paper and shampoo.  You can't buy that sort of thing with foodstamps/EBT.  But it all works off the same card.  All he had to do was go to the Atm, and pull the cash part off.  Either he's severely stupid, or realized that he was making a stupid purchase and trying to fix it.  I agree though, you don't need a bling bling stereo or radar detector while on assistance.

I've seen it myself: buying steaks with an EBT card on one transaction, then whipping out cash to buy a couple of cartons of cigarettes.
