Got to assert yourself as the Alpha Male to get some respect. Looks brutal, but I bet it didn't even hurt the dog. He never struck the dog, just tossed him to the ground, and stared him in the eyes.

My old dog & I played almost that rough & no leash.  Never a problem for him or me, but there were many pairs of pants that needed mending around the cuffs.

So was he handed a real gun there?  Somehow he forgot to verify it was unloaded.

I have been handling canines going on 2 years. My canine is single purpose narcotics. Meaning she has no "patrol dog" training. She just finds narcotics, thats it. I work with a couple of other agencies in my area who work dual purpose canines, which is patrol and narcotics.

I have seen some things that would make your stomach turn. You have to be a strong handler or your dog with hurt you or someone else. Im not sure what the handler in the video was trying to accomplish. I have never seen a canine disciplined like that. Im not saying it's wrong, but it's not egnough video to make a call.

Looks rough to me.  I dont see how swinging the dog up in the air by its neck and slamming it to the ground is some type of training.  Abusing a dog is not the way to train them, being stern and forceful is one thing, but swinging it from its neck crosses the line, im my opinion.

I think his head is attached directly to his shoulders, so to speak.  But don't believe me.  Ask the first guy he takes down.

Just a guess, but I'd say that was more of a training session for the handler than the dog.  I've not seen a police K-9 so rambunctious and unruly--dunno what's up with that.

Positively that did NOT hurt the dog in any way.  That is a normal way to establish dominance over the canine.  It was not "brutal" or harmful at all.

Looks like a Belgian Malinois?

We had one of those at the SO for a short while and it was batshit crazy. The handler wasn't much better though.

Dogs are pack animals.

To make them "fit in" the pack, you HAVE to be the dominant, or alpha male so that the dog does what you tell it.  If the dog EVER thinks that he is above you in the dominance game, you're fucked.

Some dogs are stronger willed then others. Some require minor "adjustment" to get them in line and others need to be put in their place "sharply" so that they understand the chain of command in the pack.

It is what it is.

edited to add:

I only watched a few seconds of the vid before the above post.  Now I will add that this dog was simply NOT submitting as necessary and what that handler did was totally appropriate.  If after awhile of not submitting to the handler in that manner, that dog would be totally innapropriate for police work and would be out of the program.

You can hear in the background, a trainer, giving the LEO advice on how to submit the dog, and it simply wasn't submitting.  Perhaps a stronger handler was necessary for this dog, but if it continues to not submit to a lower status in the pack, it is not suitable for that line of work.

I would have done the same or worse were I in that situation, and in the past, I have.

Thats how you handle intelligent, strong willed working dogs.  You gotta be the boss or it gets all fucked up.
