Rate these firearms: 1 being lowest, 10 being the highest. Please state WHY you rated it that way Rifles: Remington 798 Remington 700 BDL Remington 700 SPS Remington 710 Savage 11 FCNS Mossberg 100 ATR Thompson-Center Encore Shotguns: Yildiz SPZ-ME Beretta White Onyx Beretta XTREMA2 BSA Classie Tristar Gentry Luxe Browning SilverHunter Browning BPS Remington 11-87 Remington 870 Mossberg 935 Mossberg 835 Mossberg 500 Mossberg 535 Thanks! |
All you need in red. I'll assume the Mossberg 500 is a 18' barrel |
18.5 but yeah |
10's are in red, Remington 700 is the best bolt action IMO, I only voted Remington 870 because the Ithaca 37 isn't on the list, I'm not a Mossberg fan at all. |

Rifles: Remington 798 Remington 700 BDL Remington 700 SPS Remington 710 Savage 11 FCNS Mossberg 100 ATR Thompson-Center Encore Shotguns: Yildiz SPZ-ME Beretta White Onyx Beretta XTREMA2 BSA Classie Tristar Gentry Luxe Browning SilverHunter Browning BPS Remington 11-87 Remington 870 Mossberg 935 Mossberg 835 Mossberg 500 Mossberg 535 With a few tools, you can change the Savage into different calibers and from my experience, Savage is usually more accurate out of the box than a Remington. |

I just bought an Rem 700 SPS, but I haven't shot it yet. I have shot the 11-87. It seems like a pretty good gun. I do have the Mossberg 500 and I do like it. (Not as much as a Benelli, but...) I have also shot a Mossberg 835. I didn't care for it. It seemed like I was using the state of Florida for a shotgun. Difficult to track pheasants while shouldering Florida.... |

Remington 870 for the shotgun..... can't go wrong I can't believe no one said T/C Encore for the rifle. Extremely accurate with multiple caliber options. One firearm frame can bring you several different rifle options (smaller caliber barrels for varmints up to larger caliber and muzzeloading barrels for larger game, AND shotgun barrels). Different stock options too. |
The Rem 798 I am not familiar with, though it looks like it has promise.
The Rem 700, in all its incarnations is a very good rifle. It is the platform of choice for those who want to built a custom, and very accurate rifle. The BDL has more features than the economy-model SPS, though they have the same action.
The Rem 710's sole reason for existence is to be a low-cost rifle. I would not buy one.
The Savage bolt rifles have a very good reputation for out-of-the-box accuracy. I have heard more good things about box-stock Savages than box-stock Remingtons. Spend a little extra for the better trigger. The Savage std trigger is "functional" and "very basic".
I do not know about this one - never shot one.
This is a break-open single-shot action. It is very strong, and makes a wonderful short/light rifle. The trigger is not bad either, and can be worked on to make it very nice. Depending on the barrel, they can be very accurate.
I'm no shotgun guru, though I do like the Ithaca 37. If I were to buy a semi-auto, I'd go with a Benelli recoil operated gun. Gas guns tend to be finicky eaters. |

What caliber of Mossberg ATR? I have mixed feelings about mine but I'd give it an extra point for being the cheapest modern .308 available at <$300 (I paid $287 at Academy) The mag follower is plastic and sucks major ass. I had to spend some time carefully sanding and polishing it to keep the bolt from sticking on it and scraping large grooves in it. The safety is too stiff, and since the stock isn't perfectly aligned with the barrel, I had to sand it some too, in order to complete the factory free float. After all that its a pretty good rifle. You get what you pay for I guess. I'd give it a 5 just because the mossy oak breakup finish is cool. ETA I forgot to mention the trigger is a bit gravely, and my .308 version only holds 4 rounds. |

I wouldn't have any of the rifles. I had a Remington 700 that jammed (that just sucked). Hit the used shelf and get a Mark X or look into the CZ 550. Shotguns: 870 and or BPS. I have owned both and couldn't imagine a better design than these. When I used to work at a pawnshop the Mossbergs 500 was the cheap junk we sold to the rabble. The safeties would break as well as the trigger guards (plastic). The barrel screwed into the magazine so there was no chance to upgrade with an extension. I wouldn't have one. |

Rifles: 1) Remington 700 BDL rigid wooden stock, good resale 2) Remington 798 rigid wooden stock, classic commercial mauser 3) Savage 11 FCNS flexible injection molded plastic stock, history of good out-of-box accuracy if you don't flex the forend between shots 4) Remington 700 SPS flexible injection molded plastic stock, upgrade requires $s 5) Mossberg 100 ATR flexible injection molded plastic stock, not much history 6) Thompson-Center Encore sensitive to ammo/headspace 7) Remington 710 cheap stock, cheap construction, not upgradeable, Fudd gun |

Rifles: Remington 798 = 9+ (It's a Rem produced 98 Mauser - hard to go wrong) Remington 700 BDL 9 (btw - I consider the Dakota 76 action a 10) Remington 700 SPS 9- (it's just the new ADL. I really like having a drop plate or detachable mag, but otherwise it's still the same 700 action and the stock is not great) Remington 710 = 4 (plastic internal parts, poor execution) Savage 11 FCNS = 8 (accurate, i don't like the safety or the stock much) Thompson-Center Encore = no experience but wanted to say the new Thompson bolt action looks very well designed and I cannot wait to try one Other bolts: Sako 75 9, Tikka T3 9 (I like my Tikka T3 Lite SS better than my buddy's Sako Finnlight, but both are outstanding guns) Shotguns: Problem on this is I have no guage of what a 10 would be - I am just not expert enough in shotguns (mediocre waterfowler with little upland and clay experience) to have a truly qualified opinion. I would rate my shotgun ability to hit as a 6 out of 10 (in other words, I stink with a shotgun and need a LOT more practice). Beretta White Onyx = 9, sweet swinging, nice trigger, i can't afford one. Is thus far my favorite of o/u I have fired. Beretta XTREMA2 = 8, overall was just not as nice for me as with the Benelli, the Beretta 390, or even the 11-87 My favorite in the autoloader class has been the Benelli Montefeltro. Browning SilverHunter = 8, I honestly liked the Beretta better but with most shotguns so much comes out in the fitting to the shooter, especially lop Browning BPS = ? I don't see any advantage over cheaper 870s, 1300s, Mossbergs, and Benelli Novas. I think the Benelli Nova has the best design of the pumps, but don't own one because my cheap 1300 still goes everywhere and does everything I need it to. Remington 11-87 = 8.5, heavy but reliable Remington 870 = 9.0, reliability |
We carry the 223,243,270,25-06, and 30-06. Our store hasnt carried any 308s since november of last year. This past monday we got a Rem 798 in 308 but that is the only that we have. What academy did you go to? -Mrs. Snaps |
Work. The long guns that I listed are the ones we carry at Academy. Im tired of getting the Fudds opinions when they talk to me. I wanted some statistics/opinions from people that I can rely on their experiences. If I say, "This is a wonderful firearm" it damn well better be a damn wonderful gun! My word is on that and I dont want my word walking out of the store with trash. Most of my coworkers are also Fudds. I refuse to be lumped in there with Fudds. So far so good. |
I'm lazy today......... +1 because I've owned them(and it's hard to type with the cat on the keyboard! )

Rifles: Remington 798 9 Great looking and I would guess good quality. Remington 700 BDL 10 It is hard to beat the 700 for accuracy and quality. Looks good also. Remington 700 SPS 10 Again, it is a 700 accurate quality. Stnthetic stock works well. Remington 710 5 inexpensive but accurate. Often called a trow away rifle. Savage 11 FCNS 10 Accurate and very good quality. Not as good looking as the 70 and the 700. Mossberg 100 ATR Thompson-Center Encore 7 Often good accuracy often not. Single shot is a minus to me. Shotguns: Yildiz SPZ-ME Beretta White Onyx 10 Love it great quality and beautiful. Beretta XTREMA2 8 good quality do not like the looks BSA Classie Tristar Gentry Luxe Browning SilverHunter Browning BPS 9 Great looking and high quality pump gun. Reliable and strong. Remington 11-87 10 Great quality and good looking. Dependable Remington 870 10+ This is the standard for all pump action shotguns. Reliable, strong and good looking. Not all that expensive either. Mossberg 935 9 Mossberg 835 9 Mossberg 500 9 Mossberg 535 9 All the Mossbergs are great shotguns. I would be very comfortable armed with one. I simply prefer the 870. |
....especially if you have firearms! |

Ya know, you could shoot mine in a couple of weeks if you felt like it... Ok, the Savage is a 12FV, but it's not a major difference. |

The Remington 700 is highly reliable and accurate. I do not like the cheek piece though. Of your limited choices, it would be my choice. I like pump actions and have owned both the Browning BPS and also the Remington 870. Both are utterly reliable and well made guns. The Browning is nicer and the quality is evident. The Remington is more of a utilitarian piece and serves its purpose well. If you don't like tang safeties, the Browning is not for you. Also , the Browning comes with a very nicely figured cut of wood. I myself found it difficult to abuse this gun as it was intended. I put the Remy through hell. |
