I currently have an iPod Mini but was thinking about getting an iPod Video and giving the mini to my brother.

My question is, can I transfer the songs on the mini back to my computer so I can put them on the new iPod?

Yes, but not with iTunes.

You'll either need to know how to alter the "hidden" property of a folder or find software to copy the files back for you.  Google for it.

They let you copy 5 songs then u gotta buy the programs. That's gay.

I dunno if it's any different with the Mini, but I have a regular 40GB 4G iPod, and the files that are on the iPod stay on the computer that I use to send files to it; they're just copied over.

Doesn't the ipod and itunes "sync" every time they are connected? Aren't the tunes already on your computer?

That's the way the wife's works.  The songs are merely copied.

Once it's connected, recognized in iTunes etc.,  you add or subtract songs from the pod song list . then when you synch it old songs disappear and new ones are added.  Takes a while if it's a lot of songs.

Digital Rights issues are another issue but generally if you've purchased the music and you're on an "authorized" computer things should be the same.

ETA the Edit top line contains the Synch command for the iPod.  It doesn't light (it's greyed out) up unless an iPod is recognized and listed in the Library column on the far left.

I think that is an option inside iTunes. I remember seeing it before and turning it off.

If you want to be able to transfer the songs freely to and from a IPOD try EphPOD

I got one for Christmas so this will come in handy.

It pissed me off that they do it hidden like that.  I knew there had to be ways around it but I hadn't had the chance to mess with it yet.

Just go to TOOLS > FOLDER OPTIONS > VIEW > click on the radio button: "Show hidden files and folders" > APPLY. If you use a PC, that is.

Then browse your iPod like you would an external hard drive. The files are in oddly-numbered folders, but you can open them and read the names of the files just fine.

Question... my ipod is pretty new and the program posted above said that it might not work with new ipods.

I accessed the hidden files on my ipod and the music has filenames like "ADGB" instead of the song name.    If I copy those files on my new computer and put them in Itunes, will the ID3 tags still be read and they will show up with the correct song names in the list?   I figure since it was Itunes doing it in the first place it won't be a problem.
