better go thru a dealer in NZ, the US has export controls on weapons of that type.

Theoretic ly, yes.
In actual practice, if you are not .gov or. mil, bring a truckload of spare chain saw chains, because you will need them to cut through the red tape.

It would probably be cheaper and certainly faster to copy the original and manufacture your own

During the break-up of Yugoslavia, there were some shady exports of .50cal rifles to the region.  The rifles went through Switzerland first and then were supposed to go to private hunting lodges in Africa to hunt elephants.  But they were side-tracked to the former Yugoslavia and Albania.  There was a whole episode on a show here called '60 Minutes'.  I realized afterwards that you may not get the reference.
