I am moving soon and I got this old desktop computer I dont want to take with us. So I hear when you get rid of a old computer that you really should destroy the hard drive. When I take this thing apart, how will I know what the Hard drive looks like? I really don't know shit about computers. And once I get this hard drive out how should I destroy it?

Nuke it from orbit its the only way to be sure :P Really now it will say "Hard Disk" or "Hard drive on it" Be silver/black (Most likley) Large hammer or shooting it will destroy it.

Smash it with a hammer and throw it in the trash. Unless the FBI or CIA are investigating you and put it back together you're probably safe.

Just go to Google and enter hard drive wipe program. Look through the results and you will find one that will over write your drive so nothing is recoverable. why tear something up that may be of use to someone.

Well, strong magnets are supposed to erase them. But if you have any sensitive data on there at all, I would probably

break it into many pieces or take a sawzall to it if you have one. Or drive it over with a truck. There is a metal disc

inside of the case that spins around, if that is in pieces it is going to be next to impossible to recover any data from it.

Bring the computer to the range and ask that same question.

or you can also place a strong magnet on the hard drive for a few minutes on each side.

Talk to your comm folks, or even i can hook you up. No need to destroy the hard drive if it works.

There are DoD approved programs that "wipe" the infrormation. No need to destroy a working drive.
