| Does any one have a gun room? If so how secure is it. Any body have pics of their gun room set up? |
Congratulations on the twins! ![]() ....Sorry 'bout the gun room.

| I don't, but my friends father in law has a gun WING in his house. I've never seen it, but I've seen the door for it. From what I've seen, and what I've been told, it's about the size of 5 normal bed rooms, all concrete/rebar walls with Steel plateing on the inside walls and ceiling. Oh, it's also underground. It has a Ft. Knox vault door (which is all I've seen), as well as 15 other gun safes in it. My friend (who is not a gun person, but not an anti, he just doesn't care), said that it's quite impressive. I asked him what's in it, and he said "mainly military weapons like in movies." I asked him if he had anything full auto, and he said that that's what's in the safes, most of the guns are mounted on the walls (my friend could easily think that anything EBR is full auto). If I ever get in, I'll take pics (if he'll let me). |

Want some tips? Ok Firarms at still kept in a locked cabinet when I'm away (so there is two layers of security). I have heavy shelves that line half the room that hold things like ammo, range boxes, and such. I have a heavy duty workbench with a reasonably large (6+") vice. Bench is use for all my firearm stuff, plus any household projects. My reloading gear is mounted on a piece of 2x10 that can be bolted to the bench or I can clamp it to a Black & Decker workmate (also kept in the room). Ya gotta have some good gun posters, and you need a shelf for reference materials (reloading books, Hatchers Notebook, FM 23-9, the -10 and the -23&P etc.) I've also got a utility sink. I find it's very helpful especially when using SLIP 2000 carbon cutter. Also every good gun room needs a radio at the minimum, bonus points if you have Cable TV and a DVD player. My room is setup with the primary light set on a motion detector (walk into the room the light comes on). I have several extra lights, but right now I'm working on adding shop lights to the room and increasing the number of power outletts. |

Great tips above from Forest (as always). In my case, I had the house alarm wired/programmed in such a way that the gun room is on a separate circuit and has to be disarmed separately -- even if the rest of the house is disarmed or on "bypass," the gun room is "hot." (It has door, motion, and fire coverage.) Being a former bedroom, I don't have a sink or workbench in there (separate workshop out back for that stuff) and I keep most of my bulk ammo stash in a separate out-building, but I do have satellite TV/radio in there. A big +1 to the basic safes/locking cabinets "extra layer of security" idea Forest mentioned -- a good idea and one I use, except for the ARs in the "entertainment center" I converted (I'll hate to see that go... |
If that room is also sound proof, you can use it to your advantage, for the twins. |
Good idea.
I got lucky, the first owner of the house put it in to use the room as a photo lab. I think my use is better ,
Bummer about the entertainment center, that thing is just too cool. BTW Congrat's on the Twins

My gunroom is also my office. It is in the basement. Concrete block walls on all sides. Custom made steel door. Steel plating on the ceiling. Has 2 workbenches: 1) Used as tool storage and catch all. 2) Actual work space for firearms. Has base cabinets underneth for storage. I have a large "L" shaped desk for the computer/printer. TV with cable and a radio. Track lighting Wall racks for gun storage. And other shelving for storage. My tinfoil up-bringing, prevents me from posting pics. |
Run a duct from the HVAC into your room if you have forced air heating/cooling. Or if a duct already runs through the room add a vent to it (pretty easy to do). I've found that keeps the humidity down. |

+1...now I gotta walk around at work all day with a...you know... |
Wow, I thought I had a lot of guns ... |
You'd have to reenforce the roof with some inside braces, those containers are designe t take the loads on the corners not the roof. You'd also need to waterproof the outside against groundwater. FYI this was a subject covered in the SF forum, some good info there in a few older threads about using shipping containers for buildings (above & below ground). |

Yes. In the basement. Rebar concrete foundation with outside ground level up to ceiling on three sides. Reinforced walls on the entry wall. Heavy fireresistant steel door and frame with mechnical dead bolt. Recessed lighting, heating and A/C installed along with dehumdifier. Fireproof safes inside. All dangerous materials and firearms, with exception of necessary QR home defense guns are safely tucked away along with critical personal papers. Will it stop a pro? Certainly not. It will deny amateurs easy access, stop young inquisitive family males and their hoodlum buddies, and will provide us with a cushion of reaction time. No pics available. |
| Yes, I have one in my basement, it has a large heavy work bench with a vice and shelves above and behind. I store my ammo under and have a gun locker bolted to the wall. The entrance to the room is pretty well hidden and locked. You need good lighting and close plugins. Two layers of security to get to guns ounce in the house. Mostly likely they would just take the .45 and AK I keep out. |
What is the size of that room? |
5'6"x23' |
