ok, first of all, let me clear up that i don't plan on "stealing" artists music. most of what i'm looking for is old, obscure, and out of print. anything else i'll pay for on napster.

anyway, was wondering what site/program is the best/safest. i've heard of limewire, but a friend told me about Ares, and i thought about downloading it. the only thing i'm worried about is a bunch of spyware.

thoughts? suggestions?

Sad thing is, old and obscure will still get you in trouble.

That being said, I hate P2P sites.. Bittorrent for the win...

First you need a client (I use bitcomet) install it. Then use one of the sites listed to "search" for what your looking for, will have a download link to the torrent file and the client will download it.

Quick bittorrent primer:

You need a client, and a way to find torrents.  Common clients:  Azureus, Morpheus, BitTorrent, BitTornado, BitComet.

A torrent is a small text file (ends in .torrent) containing information on the file(s) you want to download, and the address of a "tracker" - a central place that will tell you who has the file(s) you want.  The file(s) are broken down into many, many pieces, usually 100 or more.  Your client downloads each of the pieces as it is found, and provides the pieces you already have for other users.

The beauty of this system, is that if whoever is downloading a file is also uploading it at the same time.  If there are 5 pieces, and you have numbers 1, 3, and 5, and another person needs 2 and 4, the client swaps with the other users, effectively reducing the badnwidth requirements of teh provider by 50%, and possibly even increasing you download speed.

BitTorrent is VERY good at using all available bandwidth.  Be sure to set limits in your client if you want to do anything else on the net while its downloading.

One final thing:  A .torrent can be one file, or an entire directory.  This makes it VERY easy to download entire CDs, entire DVDs (including cover art and chapters), and software that is ready to run.

EDIT - Tracker sites.  For music and movies, i use demonoid.com.  It is not as large as some of the other sites out there, but it has NO PORN.  This isn't because i'm a prude, but rather because it keeps my from having to dig through 500 copies of Heather Brooke to find the CD i'm looking for!

too many bands too name. everything from The Avengers, to NYC and Boston HC, some straight edge, and of course british and american oi. also find it a decent way too find new bands that i haven't heard of yet. Xnews was great for that, but my satellite internet doesn't offer any newsgroup service.........
