For those of you here at ARFCOM that are left handed, have you had any problems with ejected shell casings hitting you (or your facial area) after shooting a handgun (or rifle/shotgun)?  My girlfriend (a lefty) has expressed some interest in shooting my Glock and I was wondering if she might have a problem with the shell casings flying back toward her face.

I have not had that problem.  You might want to teach her to shoot a pistol with both hands.

With rifles it can be an issue (depends on the rifle) - but I have a hard time comprehending how right or left hand grips would influence this on a pisol.  I have trained weak-handed on pistols quite often, and the actual placement of the pistol is exactly the same as with my strong hand.

I'm right-handed and I usually get a handfull of empties in my face or down my shirt while I'm shooting a handgun.

Never but will ocassionally catch the hot brass down my shirt from the person shooting to the left of me.

During rifle matches (with my Bushy DCM) in the sitting position, the empties hit the top of my right shoulder and roll down my back. It's a real bitch when a hot piece of brass goes down inside the collar of your sweatshirt!

And no bullpups for us southpaws!

But eye protection ALWAYS

There are bullpups for lefties.

I have had no problems with anything. I wonder if a weak ejector might just throw them in the face.

Only with SP1 type rifles.

I've had that problem with 1911s.  I've heard the ejector can be tuned to eliminate that problem, but I refuse to take a brand new pistol and have it worked on just to make it work right.  I sold them and will not own another.

The Bushmaster M17 Bullpup is much, much worse.

I've never fired a Steyr AUG but I wouldn't bet on it being pleasant for a southpaw.

Some SP1's I have trouble with.  That's about it.

Some of my Glocks occasionally throw brass directly in my face, but it is rare, and I dont think is because I am left handed.

You have to swap the ejection port side with the Augs.

I don't like bullpups.

This lefty has never had a problem with any weapon he has fired, pistol, rifle or shotgun. I did have to shoot an AUG righty, though, because the bastid who owned it didn't have the decency to own the lefty bolt kit for it

Seriously, there is nothing to worry about.

I have shot numerous firearms, never had a problem being a leftie so far.

Shooting my 1911 last week, two handed, had one hit my cheek. That has never happened before. They usually land on the top of my head or go over my shoulder. Never even notice 'em while shooting a rifle. Give her the gun, a full mag, shooting glasses, and tell her to go at it !!!

Lefty here, no problems with any auto I've fired, pistol, rifle OR shotgun. 1911's,Sigs, etc, nothing. AR15, M1A, no issue. 11-87, no issue either. She can enjoy fully.

+2

Had a Colt Combat Gov model that ejected the cases straight back so I ended up with a bunch of "C" shaped cuts in my forehead from the case mouth.

BUT in all fairness - it was just as dangerous to regualr right handers as well.

For the time I owned it I only shot it while wearing a baseball cap - my shooter cap was pretty shredded by the time I traded that gun off for a knife.

Edit: I like P-35 HiPowers or Bereta 92's as I have owned several and no ejection issues with those as a lefty.

How Sinister!

you could just turn the gun sideways. it works in the movies, so it must be a good idea

I've been left-handed all my life.  I learned to shoot righty and am damn glad.  Even though I'm left eye dominant, I WILL NOT shoot left-handed.  I don't have to worry about casings in the face, etc..  Life is a lot easier shooting right-handed.

BTW; has anyone noticed that Bin Laden shoots the AK left-handed in that video clip that's been shown a million times?  Being a lefty, I noticed it right away.

I've never had a problem with handguns.  Thank God for the deflector on the AR15.

Boy did I learn that the hard way....

A buddy of mine bought an Uber-rare Norinco Bullpup (funky lookin think with an AK action) and offered me a go. I hadn't ever shot a bullpup and was so geeked (this was at a shoot and everything was rushed/lots of shit going on around us) to put a mag thru it that I totally forgot about he ejection port sitting RIGHT NEXT TO MY MOUTH...  Good Lord did that hurt..... The shell casing cammed out of the ejection port, right into where my lip and cheek meet. The opening on the casing cut an almost perfect circle in my lip and damn near knocked my tooth out. Like as in serious nerve pain.

Probably won't do that again.....

The only gun ive had problems with shooting lefty is my Walther P22.  about 1 round in 10 will come straight back and hit me in the face.  All others have been good including ym old Colt Gold Cup Commander 1911.

My question is, has she ever shot a rifle or gotten use to shooting one left handed.  If not, try and start her out on it right handed.  I am a lefty and by some freak of nature shoot my handguns left handed (which I have no complaints) but shoot rifle right handed.  It feels really weird to shoot rifle left handed too.  I don't have any idea why I shoot rifle right handed but I just do and I think it goes along the same lines of using a computer mouse.  If you start out doing that right handed then it's natural.  If you try it left handed, it's awkward.

My mother shoots lefty.  She has never complained at all about brass.  AR15, XDs, Berettas, etc.
