Yesterday I got a flu shot at work in my left shoulder now it hurts like hell and the muscle won't stop spasming.  Something to worry about?

Don't know about the spasm, but you may want to consider chelation therapy to get rid of the mercury in the vaccine...

I don't think I've ever had the spasms, but the pain is normal.  They have to give the shot into the muscle so the spasm may be a side effect for some people I suppose.

My wifes boss, his wife had the flu shot 4 years ago and her side effect was (right side)paralization. My wife has not gotten the flu shot since.

I find that if after I get the shot I go work out then my arm doesn't get sore or swollen.  Maybe do a few sets of pushups or flies and the soreness will go away.  YMMV.

What mercury?  The Thimersol added to keep pathogenic bacteria from infecting the vaccine?  The benefit from it far outweighs the non-existant risk.

Instead of believing the scare mongers, why don't you read up on hormesis?  Everything is toxic, the poison is in the dose.

Mercury IS a part of the environment and human bodies have several pathways to deal with it, in small doses.  The main being sulfur proteins which trap and dispose of mercury through disulfide bond.  This is why chronic mercury exposure can be determined by hair and nail sampling since these structures are formed by proteins with disulfide bonds.

Mercury posioning historically was limited to people working with mercury chloride, namely hatters.  And recently, only those working with methyl mercury and the like.  No one has ever exhibited toxicity from Thimersol.

The biggest side effect I have had from flu shots is the Flu.  Every year I have had the shot, I got the flu.  Maybe I didn't get it as bad as I would have, but I got it.  I haven't had a shot in 8 years and guess what...8 years, no flu.

YMMV

Flu shot = 2 week hospital stay w/ 1 week on respirator.  At least in my case.  Yours might vary.  Needless to say, I don't get flu shots.  I don't get the flu either

For the resident mercury fear mongers from the Rochester U study link above:

Even though the world's fish contain slight amounts of mercury, eating lots of fish carries no detectable health risk from low levels of the substance, even for very young children and pregnant women, concludes the most comprehensive study of the subject yet.

The findings come from a nine-year University of Rochester study conducted in the Republic of the Seychelles, an island nation in the Indian Ocean where most people eat nearly a dozen fish meals each week and whose mercury levels are about 10 times higher than most U.S. citizens. Indeed, no harmful effects were seen in children at levels up to 20 times the average U.S. level. The work is published in the August 26 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association.

The ones i have had, I had the same side effects. My GF got one a couple months ago, and I think they did something wrong, because her arm still hurts when she moves it, or puts it above her head.

The shot is less then .5cc of the vaccine.

Its given intramuscularly.

So I dont see how it could effect her just entire left side. I think you were correct to question her claim.

Now there are cases of Guillain-Barre paralysis caused by flu shots. That was in about 565 cases in 1976.

Since then there havent been any that I am aware of.  Due to the legal climate you can understand if there was any significant chance of adverse effects, the shots would be pulled.

Any flu vaccine can cause Guillain-Barre but is highly unlikely since they have modified how it was made after 1976.

The main side effects my patients experience from the flu shot include localized swelling and tenderness, and malaise the next morning.

Thousands die from the flu annually. If you have chronic metabolic, cardiovascular, or pulmonary disease, or are old or very young, I urge you to get a flu shot.

You can take that with a grain of salt--I'm not a Thimersol haten', homeopathic lovin', chelation therapy slurpin' jedi. I'm just a State licensed, board certified physician.

If you search "CDC" and "Flu vaccine," they have a great pdf on the flu shot.

To avoid the pain of the shot, I always get in the front of the line where I know that the needle will be sharpest.

Seriously, I'm the only one in the family that got a flu shot.  Sunday night and Monday everyone in my house got the flu except me.  It was a pretty violent strain, too.  I had a big mess to clean up.

You don't know what the heck you are talking about. Influenze is a respiratory disease. You are thinking of the "stomach flu," viral gastroenteritis.

And for all the people you think you can get the flu from the vaccine--it's impossible. The vaccine contains KILLED virus.

You can however still get the flu if you get the vaccine. The vaccine doesn't guarantee immunity, and there are other strains of flu that could infect you. The strains contained in the flu vaccine (3) are a best guess based on last year's flu strains.

+1,000,000!!!!

I've had the flu shot since high school!  6 years in a row!!!  I got the flu shot; I GOT THE FLU!!!  Now it's been 5 years since i've gotten a flu shot, and GUESS WHAT!?!?!?  NO FLU FOR 5 YEARS!!!

Incredible, isn't it!!!

Since you have only a MD and no anecdotal evidence your claim must be discarded on the basis that it is backed up by science.  The flu shot gives you the flu, get with the program.

Mine's not working then.  After a bad case of the flu in 2000 I started getting the free flu shots at work and haven't had the flu since (knocking on wood ).

Same here.  I've been getting the flu shot for the last 10 years hoping, no praying, that I will get my does of filthy sickness.  Go figure, I haven't been able to get the flu in the past 8 years.  I think I must be getting the placebo shot.

The flu can cause dozens of symptoms, but it remains primarily a respiratory illness. You are confusing the "flu" (viral gastroenteritis) a diarrhea and vomiting disease, with the flu (influenza). It's a very common mistake. People also confuse the common cold with influenza, as they share many symptoms and are both caused by viruses.

The flu vaccine is an educated guess every year.   They guess which strain will be present this year by past records.

Sometimes the guesses are off.

The vaccine is inactivated so anyone that thinks they got the flu from the vaccine is fooling themselves.

And as pointed out, there is a huge difference between influenza and gastroenteritis which what most people confuse as the flu.

Uncle Sugar makes sure I got a flu shot every year, and the shot this year was *different*.

It burned like hell, made my arm sore like a typhoid shot, gave me stomach cramps followed by diarrhea.  It was, by waaaay far, the most unpleasant flu shot I've had in 20 years.

I don't know what they put in it, but I didn't like it.
